Explore 8-day itinerary includes 4 days at our very special, safari-style gray whale basecamps in the heart of Magdalena Bay.
See the whales in these lagoons have become "friendly" with boat operators and tour guests, and so babies will often come right over to see the people looking at them.
Our basecamp is located on the mouth of Magdalena Bay's exit to the sea, and gray whales like to hang out in these deep waters. Consequently, we are privileged to see whales right off shore from our campsite quite regularly. This greatly increases the "whale time" for our guests, as whale watching by boat is regulated by time and duration for all companies.
When you've had your fill of looking eye-to-eye with charming whale babies, we'll cross to the other side of the peninsula in the Sea of Cortez for two day tours exploring the waters of Loreto Bay National Marine Park in search of the largest animal on Earth: the blue whale.

Explore Silver Bank: The region of the Silver Bank was one of the shipping routes that were the lifelines of the Spanish Empire. In September 1641, the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de la Pura y Limpia Concepcion set sail from Havana, Cuba, laden with treasure. A week later, she was nearly destroyed by a hurricane and began a month-long trek to Puerto Rico for repairs. But just short of the goal, the Concepcion struck a shallow reef and began to sink, losing 300 passengers and crew and a fortune in silver that inspired the reef’s name. Enjoy watching the Wildlife: Humpback Whales: Humpback whales are extravagant creatures, ranging from 40-50 feet in length and weighing in at 35-40 tons. They derive their name from the distinctive high humping of their back when they dive and also from the pronounced hump at the leading edge of their dorsal fin. Watch in awe as the whales put on a show, slapping their wing-like pectoral fins on the surface of the sea, lobtailing, breaching, spyhopping and peduncle throws.

The Rogue is a great river and the trip is an excellent one for two people or a large group—and I have done both. I’ve taken both of my kids, one time each, and have organized groups of colleagues twice; most recently in 2019 when 14 of us gathered. The guides at ROW are great and help to make the trip very enjoyable. The scenery, lodging and the wonderful outdoors including warm air and refreshing water, make for a wonderful escape from the everyday routine. The fact that this trip offers beds and indoor plumbing is a nice benefit and allows those who have an aversion to camping a chance to see the wilderness. October through early December, endangered Southern Right whales and their calves cruise the sheltered waters of Gulfo San Jose, located between the peninsula and the Patagonian mainland, where we navigate unobtrusively in our kayaks for close encounters with the whales, elephant seals, Magellanic penguins, southern sea lions, and dolphins.
See the whales come here for mating and giving birth, because the protected water in the gulf is quieter and warmer than in the open sea. It’s the best place in the world to watch the nursing mothers and their playful calves up close from the shore and your kayak. Breaching, fin-slapping and tail-lobbing, the highly social whales will captivate your attention with their behaviour.
Our advice: Spend an extra day in Buenos Aires (most international flights come through here) before and after your trip.
