Things to do in Baltic Sea - Expert’s guide
1. The Hill of Crosses, Lithuania
There are more than 100,000 crosses adorning this hill north of Šiauliai, Lithuania. Families of the soldiers left the crosses here after an 1831 battle - an uprising against the Russians - and since then, more and more have been left. This somber, yet popular sight in Lithuania has become a Catholic place of pilgrimage. After Lithuania earned its independence in the early 1990s, the tradition was reborn and many more crosses were added.
2. Basilica of the Assumption, Aglona, Latvia
Each year on August 15th, Catholic pilgrims made their way to Aglona, Lativa, to visit this important shrine celebrating the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven, the Basilica of the Assumption. This important Lativian church was built in late Baroque style and boasts a large collection of art and sculptures as well as the “Our Miraculous Lady of Aglona” icon from the 17th century and only viewed on religious celebrations.
3. Narva Castle, Estonia
One of Estonia’s top sightseeing attractions, Narva Castle dates back to the 13th century when it served as a home for the Danish king’s vice-Regent. Today, it is the most well-preserved defensive structure in Estonia. Climb the Tall Hermann Tower for an incredible view of the Estonian countryside and the Narva River. Don’t miss the Põhjaõu’ (Northern Yard), where you can get a taste of what life was like in Estonia three and four hundred years ago.
4. The Curonian Spit, Lithuania
Humans have long inhabited the Curonian Spit, Lithuania’s remarkable sand dune peninsula. These are Europe’s highest sand dunes, and the spit is Russia’s smallest national park. Follow one of the top Lithuanian natural attractions’ six walking trails, keeping an eye out for migrating birds and a variety of wildlife, from red deer to wild boar.
5. Tallinn, Estonia
Beautiful Tallinn boasts Estonia’s most well-preserved Old Town. Dating back to the 13th century, this charming UNESCO World Heritage Site is undeniably walkable and brimming with things to do, from the Town Hall Square to the Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Bone up on Tallinn history at the original Kiek in de Kök tower.
6. The Northern Lights
Quite simply the Baltic region’s top natural highlight, the Northern Lights lights are a must-see. Your Baltic Sea and Lapland tour should include at least one winter night viewing of this magical and stunning phenomenon. Some Lapland tours even include overnights in glass igloos and other accommodations specially designed for optimal Aurora Borealis viewing.
7. Riga Central Market, Latvia
Shop with the locals in the labyrinthian stalls of this bustling market - set both outdoors and in WWI-era Zeppelin hangars. People-watch as you sample and buy cheese, huckleberries, baked goods and so much more.
8. Music Festival Fun
The Baltic Sea region loves its festivals and you’ll find that many northern European tours take advantage of these festive opportunities to immerse oneself in local culture and folklore. Check out Vilnius City Fiesta, a huge music and arts festival on a early September weekend each year, or the Baltic region’s biggest music and arts festival, Positivus, in Salacgrīva, Latvia, every July. Estonia is host to Tallinn Music Week every spring with as many as 200 different musical acts.
9. Vasa Museum, Stockholm
Sweden’s most popular museum, the Vasa Museum has attracted more than 20 million people since it’s opening. Those craving northern European history on their Baltic Sea tour will be smitten with the time capsule that is the Vasa battleship of the Swedish Imperial fleet, which sunk in 1628 and was recovered in 1961.
10. Kuressaare Castle, Estonia
The best-preserved castle in the Baltic, Kuressaare is also the only medieval stone castle in the Baltic region that has remained intact. Stroll the open grounds of the moat-ringed castle and take in the dramatic sea views.
