If you love to startle and delight your family with once-in-a-lifetime experiences, we have one word for you: Safari! It's out of the ordinary, but completely doable. Classic Journey's family safari to Africa's finest wildlife preserves in Zambia is unlike anything they've ever dreamed of. Together, you'll stroll with elephants in the bush and go tooth-counting at a crocodile farm. On walking and driving safaris, you'll see everything from hippos to impalas and lions, up close and personal. You'll go island hopping in the river, zipline across or rappel down the walls of the Zambezi gorge, and learn how to track big game. And it's not just wildlife. You get an amazing look at real life too. The kids learn tribal drumming techniques in the home of a village chief, play soccer with students at a local school, and meet leading conservationists. Whether you're boating in the spray of the world's most impressive waterfalls or barbecuing in the glow of a spectacular sunset, you can count on Classic Journey to look out for the different tastes and interests of the generations so everyone has an unforgettable time. |
Join us on a thrilling and exhilarating 9 days Zambian safari to see some of the best wildlife and breathtaking African scenery the Luangwa Valley has to offer. For a total of four nights, stay at Flatdogs Camp in South Luangwa National Park, followed by four nights at Luambe Camp in Luambe National Park. |
DAYS 1-3 - LIVINGSTONE
We meet in Livingstone (3 nights) at our family-friendly lodge right on the Zambezi River near the top of Victoria Falls. Not even "awesome" is a good enough word for the falls—and we'll prove it on walks and boat rides to see them from top, bottom and all sides of the Batoka Gorge. The river has cut a spectacular gorge, the perfect spot for the adventurers in your family to go ziplining or swinging out over its depths.
DAYS 4-6 - MOSI-O-TUNYA NATIONAL PARK
We hop from island to island to reach our next lodge in Mosi-O-Tunya National Park (3 nights). We'll go walking with the elephants, strike out on several walking safaris with some of Africa's most expert guides, and maybe go angling for fierce-looking tigerfish. To get a taste of local life, we'll also see how the people of Makuni Village cook and weave baskets (with a chance to try our own hands).
DAYS 7-10 - SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK
In South Luangwa National Park, our lodge (3 nights) was the longtime home of Norman Carr, the originator of the walking safari. On our daytime and evening safaris we may see lions, waterbuck, puku antelope, cape buffalo, and many others. We'll also drop in on a local school where the teachers and students always welcome our visits. On our final morning we depart from the local airstrip for connections home.
Day 1: Meet & Greet/ Local Flight Lusaka to Mfuwe
You'll book an international flight to Zambia's Lusaka International Airport (LUN). Our representative will greet you upon arrival and assist you in checking your luggage on your local flight from Lusaka International Airport to Mfuwe Airport in South Luangwa National Park.
A Flatdogs Camp guide will meet you at Mfuwe Airport and take you to Flatdogs Safari Camp in the South Luangwa National Park, one of the world's last great wildlife wonders.
After a 45-minute drive to the camp, you will check-in and relax before dinner is served later in the evening then bedtime at your chosen time.
Day 2 /3 /4: Exploring South Luangwa National Park
You'll have three full days to explore South Luangwa National Park, either on game drives or on foot as part of a walking safari. Your days will begin with a delicious breakfast, followed by a morning activity such as a game drive safari or a walking safari, followed by a return to the camp for lunch and free time to relax.
Afternoon tea will be served before the afternoon/evening game drive, which will begin with afternoon game viewing and then transition into a night safari with the use of spotlights in search of nocturnal animals after dark.
You will then return to the camp almost on time for dinner, and then to your preferred bedtime.
Day 5: Game Drive transfer from South Luangwa
Breakfast will be served before your Luambe Camp Guide/Drive meets you at Flatdogs to begin your journey to Luambe National Park. Enjoy a 4-hour road trip that will give you plenty of time to take in the new scenery, varied wildlife, and amazing birdlife you'll see along the way.
After that, you'll check-in, get lunch served, and then have time to relax and enjoy the closer-to-nature experience. Then there will be tea/coffee, followed by a late afternoon/early evening safari activity, before returning to the camp almost in time for dinner and a later bedtime.
Day 6 /7 /8: Explore Luambe National Park
This is your great opportunity to explore the amazing Luambe National Park during these days, and here is a list of things you can do during your stay:
Morning (5:00 am – 9:30 am) - Wake up to various birdcalls and the grunting hippo as they welcome a new day in the beautiful Luangwa Valley while enjoying a quick coffee with biscuits. Then, the early mornings are a great time for mammal monitoring drive with the Luambe guides or ZCP (when available). Other great morning activities include anti-poaching walks, coffee with the carmine bee-eaters OR walking the camera trap circuit to check on the night’s activity!
Midday Siesta (11 am – 2 pm) - This is your time to relax! Have a rest in your tent, or grab your binoculars and spot the birdlife from under the shade of a tree. Alternatively, spend time in the main area with our team learning more about the history of the project, looking at what was caught on the camera traps or updating the leopard family tree. A tasty lunch will be on offer at the camp before heading out for your late afternoon game drive.
Late afternoon / early evening (3 pm – 8 pm) - The late afternoon is a great time to walk the Luangwa listening to the hippos before finishing with sundowners OR heading to Chitingulu village to learn about life for the communities you live next to National Parks. Your evening will be spent relaxing in camp, with a sundowner in hand, watching the pinky sunsets over the river while listening to the antics of the hippo followed by a delicious 3-course meal in the dining area. After dinner, it is a great opportunity to listen and record the bat activity in camp for those with an interest in the smaller, more unique creatures of Luambe!
Day 9: Transfer to Mfuwe Airport / Local Flight
Breakfast will be served first, then check out of the camp and you will be transferred to Mfuwe Airport and a local flight to Lusaka where you will connect with your outbound flight.
On arrival at Lusaka International airport, you will be greeted by our representative who will then assist you in checking in for your outbound flight.
