Description

Travel to Iceland and delve into the ancient tales of Vikings and volcanoes on this eight-day adventure to its heartlands. Marvel at geothermal hot springs, witness the steamy eruptions of a giant geyser, touch the tongue of Europe's biggest glacier at Vatnajokull and cruise the Jokulsarlong Glacial Lagoon, see lava that's still warm after decades and witness the giant Skogafoss and Detifoss waterfalls in all their splendour. Travel through Iceland's isolated corners and the land of the famous Blue Lagoon – so mysterious and ethereal that they have inspired artists, poets and musicians for centuries. Plus, with a local leader on hand to answer any questions and get you from place to place, you’ll be cruising around this icy isle in no time.

Over the last few years, the number of visitors has been growing fast in Iceland and seems to increase constantly. Only about 10% of visitors ever get to experience the Westfjords region and the reason is simple; the oddly shaped peninsula of north-western Iceland is too far and separated from the ring road. If you prefer to avoid crowds of tourists and discover Iceland’s most isolated, unspoiled wilderness with a native Icelandic photographer, this tour is definitely for you.

Itinerary: Iceland Discovery

Day 1 Reykjavik

Hallo! Welcome to Reykjavik, which lies just below the Arctic Circle. The city sees around four hours of sunlight a day in winter and 22 hours or more in summer. Surrounded by volcanic peaks and crystalline ocean and boasting a vibrant arts and nightlife scene, Reykjavik's contrasts are utterly beguiling. Your adventure kicks off with a welcome meeting at 6 pm at your accommodation. If you arrive early, why not head to the National Museum, which depicts the history of Iceland from the ninth century – when the first Vikings from mainland Scandinavia arrived and settled – to the present day. Or perhaps join locals who gossip and chatter in the Laugardalslaug Geothermal Pool.

Day 2 Golden Circle / Hvolsvollur Valley

Make an early start to beat the crowds on the Golden Circle route. Head to Thingvellir National Park, home to the Parliament Plains and location of Iceland’s first parliament. Thingvellir also contains the Silfra fissure, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly pulling apart. The resulting gap is partly filled with fresh water and is clearly visible. From here head to the Geysir geothermal area, checking out Strokkur and watching as the geyser swells with blue water before erupting and shooting some 20-30 metres in the air. Be spellbound by the immense beauty and sheer power of the Gullfoss (Golden) double waterfall on the Hvita River, before proceeding to a remote farm in the Hvolsvollur region, our overnight stop for the night.

Day 3 South Coast / Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

Begin the day with a visit to breathtaking Seljalandsfoss waterfall, followed by Skogafoss waterfall. At 25-metres wide with a 60-metre drop, this waterfall roars. You can feel its power up close with a strenuous walk up a windy set of stairs up to a stunning viewpoint. The black sands and bizarre, rectangular rock formations of Reynisfjara are up next. The last stop of the day is the famous Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. Make sure you head down to Diamond Beach, where some of the icebergs are washed onto the black sand. Your leader can help you book an optional walk on the mottled blue, grey and black face of one of the tongues of Europe's largest glaciers, the epic ice cap of Vatnajokull. From Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon it is not far to our overnight stay, located on another lagoon that is sheltered by a black sandbar.

Day 4 East Fjords / Modrudalur Valley

Start the day by returning to the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. Cruise between jagged icebergs in an included boat tour. Then take a scenic drive along the rugged coast of the East Fjords. Enjoy spectacular views of high mountains, deep fjords, spectacular waterfalls, glaciers and quaint fishing villages. Make stops along the way at small but notable towns like Djupivogur, which became a member of the cittaslow movement in 2013 and is aiming to be the Happiest Town in Iceland, and drop by Egilsstadir, home to the mythic Lagarfljot Wyrm. Continue along mountain roads into the highland to the farm village of Modrudalur. At 469 metres (1539 feet) above sea level, Modrudalur is the highest inhabited place in Iceland, and snow can be seen almost year-round. Stretch your legs with a walk to the farm's church, built in 1949 by farmer Jon Adalsteinn Stefansson in memory of his wife. Spend the evening on this unique farm, which is small but rich in history.

Day 5 Lake Myvatn / Akureyri

Set off for magnificent Dettifoss, Europe's mightiest waterfall at 100-metres wide and with a 45-metre drop into the craggy shores of Jokulsargljufur canyon below. It’s so powerful that it’s vibrations can be felt underfoot. Continue to volcanic Lake Myvatn. Next is Namaskard, where steam rises from the sulphuric terrain and it’s hard to believe you’re on Earth and not Mars. Take a walk around the lava stacks and caves of Dimmuborgir and then observe the massive pseudo craters of Skutustadir. Continue to the crescent shaped Godafoss waterfall, where legend says a lawmaker priest threw the idols of the Norse gods when Christianity became Iceland’s official religion in AD1000. Travel on to Akureyri and settle into your accommodation for the evening.

Day 6 Akureyri / Snaefellsnes Peninsula

Situated at the head of Iceland's longest fjord, Akureyri is the nation's second-largest city. Embark on a short walking tour of the town, taking in the striking church and other local sights. Later, continue to Snaefellsnes Peninsula, home to the magnificent Snaefellsjokull Glacier, which played a starring role in Jules Verne's 1864 novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Next up is Lysuholslaug, where you can bathe in thermal pools (depending on the season) or check out the Icelandic horses grazing in the fields. Look forward to an included home-cooked dinner this evening.

Day 7 Snaefellsnes Peninsula / Reykjavik

Continue exploring the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, beginning with the white beach at Budir, then go on to Arnarstapi, where a short stroll along the coastal cliffs exposes you to rich bird life and other wonders of nature. Continue on to the basaltic pebble beach Djupalonssandur. In the afternoon head back to Reykjavik to complete your circuit of Iceland. You may wish to book an optional whale watching tour for late afternoon if you are here between May and December. The rest of the evening is yours for the taking. Perhaps head out for dinner with your fellow travellers and toast with a glass of Brennivin, a savoury schnapps.

Day 8 Reykjavik

Today is departure day and time to say sjaumst (see you soon)! Check out time is at midday. If you are departing later, you can arrange with reception to store your luggage at the hotel. If you wish to spend more time in Reykjavik, we'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability). Please speak to your booking agent at the time of booking. Perhaps browse some of the city's great art galleries. If you feel like something more active, book yourself on a Silfra Fissure snorkelling adventure, where you’ll discover this underwater ridge with water visibility of up to 120 metres. Alternatively, while away the hours with a soak in the geothermal waters of the famous Blue Lagoon.

Itinerary: The Westfjords Of Iceland 10 Days Workshop

Day 1 – Day of Arrival

Please arrange own transfer from Kеflаvík International Aіrроrt, located 50km from the capital city Reykjavík. Your promising adventure starts with a dreamlike drive through moss covered lava fields and lunar landscapes to reach the world’s northernmost capital. If your flight arrives early, we suggest you soak in the Blue Lagoon before you reach Reykjavík, Iceland’s most famous geothermal baths, located 23km south-west of Keflavík Airport en route to Reykjavík. The airport transfer companies include tours via the Blue Lagoon.

You will stay at a hotel close to the city centre, making it easy to explore. After you are checked in, we meet at the lobby at 19:00 (7PM) and walk together to a nice local restaurant to enjoy the first taste of Iceland’s famous culinary heritage. During the meal we get to know each other and go оvеr the іtіnеrаrу for our аdvеnturеѕ ahead.

Day 2 – Snæfеllѕnеѕ

Our journey begins with a memorable exploration of the diverse and fascinating landscape of the 100km long Snæfellsnes peninsula. The area is known as “the mіnіаturе mоdеl of Iсеlаnd” because it features a sample of all of the country’s beautiful and dynamic attractions. We experience the 1446m high Snæfellsjökull volcano which is legendary considered to be the entrance to the center of the earth in Jules Verne’s novel, The Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

Snæfellsjökull National Park provides epic photo spots of dramatic cliffs with nesting seabirds, wild rock formations and black beaches. The main sights of this photographer’s paradise are the famous and picturesque Mt. Kirkjufell, the lonely, black church of Búðіr surrounded with ancient, moss covered lava fields, the harbour of Arnаrѕtарі with its magnificent columnar basalt cliffs and lava formations and lastly the frightful castle-like basalt sculpture of Lonѕdrаngаr. We rest in a country hotel for the night however be prepared to stay up late and еnjoy the magic of late sunset and early sunrise.

Day 3-4 – Wеѕtfjоrdѕ

On the third day we take the ferry from Stykkishólmur over the vast fjord of Breiðafjörður, which separates Snæfellsnes and the Westfjords. Hopefully you have enjoyed Snæfellsnes and can now get ready for the real adventure. We take in the magnificent view of the fjord’s countless islands and with a little stroke of luck, we admire the wildlife of Breiðafjörður; рuffіnѕ, аrсtіс tеrnѕ, gulls, white-tailed eagles and whales.

Starting our exploration of the Westfjords, we first halt at a hundred years old shipwreck, the oldest steel boat in Iceland called “Gаrðаr”, encircled by the sand of Skápadalur, providing just the perfect photo opportunity with a spectacular scene.

We continue to the less known Red Beach, the “Rauðisandur” with its golden, red and orange sand stretching 10km long from cliff to cliff.

Our next station is the extraordinary photogenic Breiðavík bay which holds a lonely, tiny church and in the background a vacant, white beach and an open view to the aquamarine waters of the Atlantic. Without a doubt it’s one of Iceland’s finest treasures and will surely make up one of your finest picture.

We finish our day by the westernmost point and the largest sea-bird cliff of Europe: Látrabjarg cliff which is the most favored habitat of Iceland’s beloved рuffіnѕ. After the eventful day wе head ѕtrаіght to Patreksfjörður village where we spend the night.

The next day we will have the chance to revisit the places listed above and capture photo shots in different light and weather conditions.

Day 5 – Arnаrfjörður – Dynjandi Waterfalls

Next day we are headed over the mountain towards the most beautiful fjord of the Westfjords, the 30km long and 5-10km wide, Arnаrfjörður. According to folk tales, the fjord of Arnаrfjörður is meant to inhabit most of monsters in all the fjords in Iceland. The breathtaking view from the fjord speaks for itself.

The greatest treasure of this highly diverse landscape is undoubtedly the breathtaking Dynjandi waterfall (“Thunderous”) considered to be one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. Actually a series of seven waterfalls with the cumulative height of 100m, the waterfall plummets off the cliff, 30m wide at the top expanding to 60m wide at the bottom. Looking out from Dynjandi, you have the wondrous fjord in front of you open out to sea, which creates pure 360° visual satisfaction.

At the end of the day, we stay overnight in Þingeyri, a small village in the next fjord, Dýrafjörður.

Day 6 – Dýrafjörður – Mt. Kaldbakur

On the sixth day, wе continue to the Westfjords’ tallest mountain, the 998m high and very eye-catching Mt. Kaldbakur. Unlike the other mountains of the Westfjords that are mostly table topped, this one is more pointy and keen, thus often referred to as “the Westfjords Alps” with views of amazingly photogenic valleys in all directions.

We stop by deserted, old farm houses in Tjaldanes, Stapadalur, Lokinhamrar and Kеldudаlur to diversify our portfolio. These tiny houses are very unique and difficult to reach but the effort is surely worthwhile.

We spend the night again in Þingeyri.

Day 7 -8 – Ísafjarðardjúp

We proceed on the isolated serpentines of the 75km long Ísafjarðardjúp fjord with a few stops at spectacular photo spots. We travel around countless fjords such as Álftafjörður, Seyðisfjörður, Hestfjörður, Skötufjörður, Mjóіfjörður, Vаtnѕfjörður and Reykjarfjörður, all remote, uninhabited fjords as far as the eye can see.

Our adventurous journey takes us through the lush valley of Ingjaldssandur and the flat top of 634m high Mt. Bolafjall with staggering views. We visit the capital of the Westfjords, Íѕаfjörður (“the Fjord of ice”) and the northernmost town of the peninsula, Bolungarvík fishing village where we enjoy the open air maritime museum with fіѕhеrmеn huts and primitive tools. We travel through the scenic Korpudalur valley and stop by the famous Arnаrnеѕvіtі lighthouse as well as witnessing abandoned farms, islands, impressive light houses and cozy little towns enveloped with high and steep, flat-topped mountains.

We spend our seventh night at Íѕаfjörður, the eighth at Strandir.

Day 9 – Travel day towards Reykjavik

On our last day, we wrap up our photography adventure and return to Reykjavik. It’s a long drive, time to relax, gaze out of the window and admire the landscape without the camera in front of us. We share a dinner at a local restaurant in Reykjavík and say our goodbyes.

Day 10 – Departure

Please arrange your transfer to Keflavik Airport. In case of late departure, you may want to visit the Blue Lagoon for a nice, relaxing soak before a safe flight home.

We hope you had a wonderful and valuable photography experience with us and look forward to welcoming you back some day soon.
