Description |
We fit a lot into this amazing holiday, including; sightseeing, exploring, easy jungle hiking, a canopy-level tour, volcano-boarding, surfing and turtle and dolphin watching, as well as chilling out in peaceful cafes in brightly painted colonial towns. Starting in Nicaragua we stay in the beautiful colonial town of Granada before enjoying Lake Nicaragua with Monkey island, and the waterfalls & volcanoes of Ometepe island. A stop in Leon allows us to walk up the volcano of Cerro Negro and then ash board down! We arrive into El Salvador on a boat and then have a couple of nights in El Cuco with its white sandy beaches, where we have the opportunity to surf, and visit a turtle project. Travelling inland we visit coffee plantations and the colourful town of La Palma. Once in Honduras our first stop is the famous Mayan ruins of Copan and then we transfer to the Caribbean for three days with activities including kayaking through the mangroves. |
Day 1:
Rendezvous at the group hotel in Granada, Nicaragua. KE Land Only package services begin with a single timed transfer from Managua airport to the group hotel in Granada (approx 45mins). We meet with our guide and enjoy a welcome dinner at the hotel.
Day 2:
This morning we have a walking city tour of this beautiful colonial town. At lunch time we visit a project which provides education and food for children. We help with lunch and eat with the children. In the afternoon we board a boat on Lake Nicaragua for a 2 hour tour of the Islets of Granada. We stop at San Pablo fort as well as Monkey Island before returning to Granada. Overnight Granada.
Day 3:
At the base of Mombacho Volcano Cloud Reserve, we have an energising canopy tour with zip wires above coffee plantations with majestic views of the volcano and lake. Afterwards, a 1 hour ferry journey takes us to Ometepe Island. Our hotel here is on one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Here, we can relax in hammocks or walk through the mangroves by the lagoon, with birds and monkeys.
Day 4:
Today we walk to the San Ramon waterfall located on the southern slopes of Maderas volcano. The 2 hr walk up to the falls takes us through the humid forest. Our reward on arrival is the cooling pools of the impressive 50m high falls. After our picnic lunch we return to the hotel. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the lagoon or activities such as kayaking or cycling from the hotel.
Day 5:
We return by ferry to the mainland and transfer to Leon, a university town with history oozing from every nook and cranny! After lunch we have the option of ash boarding down Cerro Negro. This active volcano is one of the youngest in Nicaragua and this trip is not for the faint-hearted! Alternatively we can walk around the historic city of Leon and soak up its lively atmosphere.
Day 6:
We leave Nicaragua today, first taking the 2 hr transfer to the harbour town of Potosi and then a 1.5hr ferry ride across the Gulf of Fonseca to La Union, El Salvador. En route, we'll take lunch on the island of Zacatillo. If we are lucky we may see turtles, dolphins or even a whale! On arrival we transfer 45mins to El Cuco and our hotel next to one of the most beautiful beaches in El Salvador.
Day 7:
An optional surf lesson this morning, and they guarantee you will be standing on the board at the end of the lesson! Or we can opt to kayak through the mangrove forests to observe the wildlife. In the
afternoon we visit a local community turtle project where depending on the time of year the turtles will either be laying their eggs or they will be hatching and we can release the baby turtles.
Day 8:
Leaving the Pacific coast we head 2hrs inland into the cooler climes of the mountains where we visit a coffee plantation and roastery. Here we can taste and buy the fresh El Salvador coffee. After lunch in the town of Algeria and a visit to the mildly sulphurous lake, we continue 1.5hrs onto the colonial town of Suchitoto.
Day 9:
A walking city tour of Suchitoto starts our day. We visit the colonial church, local art galleries, the docks and an interesting Indigo workshop. In the afternoon we visit the Mayan site of Joya de Ceren, of UNSECO status and also the Mayan ruins of San Andres.
Day 10:
Off to Honduras today! We stop off en route at La Palma, with colourful paintings by Fernando Llort which cover the town, before transferring to Copan where we overnight. This is our longest transfer day with a total driving time approximately 6 to 7 hours.
Day 11:
We visit the Mayan ruins at Copan, the most important cultural site in Honduras and just a short distance from Guatemala. The city was occupied for around 2,000 yrs and in its heyday had a population of 20,000 people. We have plenty of time to walk around the site, before transferring to the Caribbean (3 to 4hrs drive), and the coastal town of Tela, our base for the next 3 nights.
Day 12:
Today we start with a boat tour of Jeanette Kawas National Park. This park offers the very best of both coastal marine and tropical forest ecosystems, and dolphins are often seen. We walk across the peninsula through the forest, seeing white-faced and howley monkeys. We then chill on Cocalito beach, enjoy a Caribbean style lunch and some snorkelling before returning to Tela.
Day 13:
After breakfast we visit the Lancetilla Botanical Gardens, the second largest in the world. We then have some leisure time before our sunset kayak trip in Punta Izopo National Park. This exciting tour through the maze of mangrove creeks gives us a chance to see the endangered American crocodiles and a myriad of wildlife. We have a Garifuna dinner on the paradise beach of Triunfo de la Cruz.
Day 14:
We end our holiday on this action packed Central American holiday with a single timed transfer to San Pedro Sula Airport where KE Land Only package services end.
