2021 Prices are an estimate, dates are not confirmed and may change. As a result of the remarkable biogeography of the region, our Highlights of the Eastern Indonesian archipelago provides very little overlap in bird species to our Highlights of Western Indonesia, with a phenomenal number of special and endemic birds. We begin by exploring the prime highland site of Lore Lindu National Park on the island of Sulawesi. Boasting over 70 endemic species, the exceptional range of highly desirable birds we will seek include the endemic Hylocitrea, now placed in its own monotypic family, the indescribable Purple-bearded Bee-eater, bizarre Geomalia, Fiery-browed Starling, Green-backed Kingfisher (one of many endemic kingfishers), Purple-winged Roller, Satanic Nightjar and the impressive Knobbed Hornbill. We then wing our way to the nearby island of Halmahera, where we visit a lekking site for the highly sought-after Standardwing, surely one of the most bizarre birds-of-paradise! Here we also seek a mindboggling number of Mollucan endemics including the spectacular Ivory-breasted Pitta and Moluccan Owlet-nightjar. Moving further eastwards we again enter a completely new biological zone as we arrive in Sorong, on the extreme western tip of New Guinea. Here we bird the famous Vogelkop, a veritable feast of incredible highlights may include up to seven birds-of-paradise including Magnificent, King, Lesser and Twelve-wired as well as numerous pigeons (Wompoo, Superb and Pink-spotted Fruit Doves to name a few), parrots (including the localized Black Lory) and kingfishers (Red-breasted Paradise being one of the prime targets.) We conclude our tour on the Raja Ampat Island of Waigeo, famed for the best snorkeling in the world! Here our targets in this tropical island paradise include Red Bird-of-paradise, the incredible Western Crowned Pigeon, Palm Cockatoo, Lowland Peltops and much besides. And as a way of celebrating the finale of this remarkable tour we will visit the display ground of quite possibly the most beautiful bird on Earth – Wilson’s Bird-of-paradise! |
You absolutely will not find another tour out there as packed with activities and attractions as this one, provided by CharlieTheTraveler. You will also not find another tour out there that offers it all ""FIRST CLASS,"" yet for a relatively low price. We have thousands of travelers taking this specific tour every year-and that's because no competitor can beat us on quality, price and substance. Below are just some examples of what you will see and do on this tour:
|
Day 1: Several Beaches, a Water Blow Cliff & a Romantic Dinner Almost on the Water
We need your arrival information because you will be picked up at the Ngurah Rai International Airport. Please ensure your flight arrives by no later than 10:00am. If this is not possible, then we recommend you sleep near to the airport your day of arrival and simply start this tour the following morning. We could pick you up from whichever hotel you book at, as long as it is near to the airport.
Why all this? Although the town of Ubud-where we are based for all but one night while on this 7-day tour-is a 1.5-hour drive away from the airport, we are not heading there directly. Instead, we first visit Padang Padang Beach, then Suluban Beach, then Uluwatu Temple, then Pandawa Beach, then Water Blow Cliff and finally a fishing village called Jimbaran. All of these destinations are relatively near to the international airport.
Padang Padang Beach is a great first impression of the island. Uluwatu Temple is home to a tribal dance called Kecak. Hopefully there will be an event taking place during our visit. Note that the temple is inhabited by monkeys, who are notorious for snatching visitors’ belongings. They can usually be persuaded into trading the items for fruit. Water Blow is where large waves of sea water from the Indian Ocean continually crash against jagged limestone edges of a cliff. The water blow is the outcome of the narrowing crag below the cliff face that channels a surge of water up to 30 meters high from its base following strong currents. This phenomenon results in giant, irregular splashes of wave that can reach several meters high. The area provides a 240-degree lookout of dramatic seascape that is bordered by guardrails.
Jimbaran is perfect for a sunset dinner on the beach, which is included on today's tour. Visiting Jimbaran before sunset is ‘a must’, seeing dozens of restaurants, tables and food lined up along the beach. We should be arriving in Ubud around 9:00pm.
Day 2: Cooking Class, Eating at a Native's Home, an Elephant Cave & Social Media-Worthy Photo Spots
We make a daytrip from Ubud. The destinations for today are the temples of Pura Puseh and Pura Dasar in the village of Batuan, Tegenungan Waterfall, Goa Gajah (a.k.a. Elephant Cave), a temple complex called Gunung Kawi, Tirta Empul Temple and the Tegallalang Rice Terraces. At these terraces, we take a photo at the famous bird nest and at the tree swing. In the late afternoon, we take a cooking class at a traditional home/restaurant. Following the class is dinner, which is included on today’s tour.
Day 3: A Monkey Forest, a Traditional Market & Bali's Best Place From Where to Watch the Sunset
Before making another daytrip from Ubud, we explore the town itself. One of Bali’s major arts and culture centers, Ubud has developed a large tourism industry. The main attractions are the central market and the monkey forest. Today’s other destinations are Pura Taman Ayun Temple and Tanah Lot Temple, the latter of which serves as Bali’s most famous place from where to watch the sunset.
Day 4: Rice Fields, Hot Springs, Ancient Sites & Lakes
Although we are relocating from Ubud to the beach village of Lovina, there are many worthwhile stops en route: the rice fields in Jatiluwih, Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, Lake Bratan, Munduk Waterfall and the hot springs in Banjar. Shortly after arriving in Lovina, we watch the sunset.
Day 5: Dolphins, a Boat Ride, Waterfalls & Temples
Before leaving Lovina, we take a traditional boat so we can hopefully see dolphins. En route back to Ubud, we visit Gitgit Waterfall, Sekumpul Waterfall, Jagaraga Temple and Pura Meduwe Karang Temple.
Day 6: Hiking Mount Batur to Watch the Sunrise & Breathtaking Nature
We make a daytrip from Ubud. Today starts very early, as we do a 2-hour hike up Mount Batur. Watching the sunrise from atop is an unforgettable experience. Today’s other destinations are Pura Ulun Danu Batur Temple, the Mother Temple of Besakih and the landscape surrounding both Iseh and Sidemen.
Day 7: Our Tour Ends This Morning
Transportation will be arranged for you to reach the airport.
