Description | Transport yourself back to the Middle Ages on this fantastic tour of three classic capitals of the Baltic, staying in centrally located hotels. Within the walls of Tallinn, find an abundance of medieval memories - the Old Town is the best preserved medieval town in Europe and has much about which to boast. Riga is a sophisticated neighbour, with a medieval core surrounded by parks, boulevards and art nouveau. Our final destination is small, pretty Vilnius. Growing as a city and a tourist destination, it retains a relaxed and authentic cosy old-town charm. |
Day 1 London - Tallinn
Titan’s VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home, for your journey to London Gatwick Airport for a scheduled Air Baltic flight to Tallinn via Riga. On arrival we transfer to the Radisson Blu Hotel Olümpia Tallinn (4T), ideally located in the city, near the Old Town and its busy harbour. The rest of the day is free for you to settle in and start your own exploration of Tallinn, Estonia’s capital.
Day 2 Tallinn
We explore wonderful Tallinn by coach and on foot, taking in the Old Town with entrance to the Dome Church included. Tallinn’s Old Town is one of the best-preserved medieval town centres in Europe. It boasts a town wall with 26 defence towers, the Dominican St Catherine’s Monastery founded in 1246, the 600-year-old Gothic Town Hall, the world’s oldest functioning pharmacy on the Town Hall Square and the 159m high Oleviste Church, which was the world’s highest structure in the 16th century. Beautiful Toompea Castle, on the edge of the Old Town, is the seat of the nation’s parliament. We pause for a coffee and taste of Vana, the local liquor, before you are free to explore at leisure.
Day 3 Lahemaa National Park
Lahemaa National Park is a perfect retreat from nearby Tallinn. The vast parkland covers a cross of northern Estonian landscapes - Baltic klint, mires and peat bogs, vast forests and erratic rocks; plus historical villages and manor houses. We follow a wooden walkway trail over bogs and visit both Palmse Manor, one of the grandest Baroque mansions in Estonia, and delightful Sagadi manor house. Visit the Marine Museum in the village of Käsmu. According to a legend, the godfather of the village was a captain named Kasper, who, having escaped a shipwreck, built a chapel here earning it the moniker ‘the Village of Captains’. Lunch will be taken at the charming 16th century Vihula manor house.
Day 4 Tallinn - Riga
After breakfast we travel to Riga, pausing in the small coastal town of Pärnu on the way. We have a short tour of the city with time at leisure to purchase lunch before continuing our journey across the Latvian border. On arrival, check into the centrally located Radisson Blu Hotel Latvija (4T) for two nights.
Day 5 Riga
Take a guided walk through Riga’s labyrinth of cobble-stone streets where Gothic churches and ancient buildings transport you back to the Middle Ages. Along the picturesque streets you will find numerous places of cultural and historical importance, such as the Dome Cathedral, St Peter’s Church, St Jacob's Church, Great and Small Guild houses, Parliament building and the Swedish Gate. In addition to the walking tour of Old Riga, a coach tour will take you along the Boulevard Ring to view the Bastion Hill, City Canal Park and the art nouveau district. No other city in the world can boast of such a vast collection of authentic art nouveau examples in such dense concentration! The afternoon is free for you to enjoy this city.
Day 6 Riga - Vilnius
Our journey continues after breakfast. We visit the Baroque Rundale Palace, one of Latvia’s hidden gems set in an appropriately elaborate French garden. The stunning building was a palace for nobility before becoming a garrison for the German army in WWI, a hospital, and a school. We enjoy lunch here, before continuing to visit the Hill of Crosses, where an estimated 200,000 crosses stand in eerie, inspiring unison. We arrive in Vilnius and check in to the elegant Radisson Blu Royal Astorija Hotel (4T+).
Day 7 Vilnius
A morning tour of Lithuania’s capital takes in the unique mixture of styles that have developed over centuries, brought in from other European countries. The skyline of the Baroque Old Town is pierced by the steeples of countless churches. This city has a tortured past, but the reminders serve to encourage a spirit of freedom. Included in the city tour is entrance to the Amber Museum and Gallery. After lunch, continue your explorations independently or take an optional excursion to Trakai, Lithuania’s ancient capital. The main landmark of this town full of architectural and cultural monuments is Trakai Castle on an island in the stunningly beautiful Galve Lake.
Day 8 Vilnius - London
We transfer to the airport for a scheduled Air Baltic flight to London Gatwick via Riga. On arrival you will be met and guided to your Titan vehicle, for the journey home.
