Highlights

  • Imagine sipping a glass of wine on a sunset beach, where a gently receding tide reveals untold marvels of starfish and colorful invertebrates. The smell of dinner cooked hot in a dutch oven mixes with the fresh scent of cedar from the forest. As the lapping waves lull you into the serenity of the sunset mirroring rosy hues on the water, a great “WHOOSH” draws your attention to the coast. As you rush to the ocean’s edge, a pearly black orca fin lifts elegantly from the ocean’s smooth surface, followed by half a dozen others.
  • Don't just wait around for orcas! Your time in Johnstone Strait will be filled with a variety of activities. On our basecamp trip, plan to kayak 4-5 hours per day to different areas of the strait including Robson Bight Ecological Reserve. It also allows time for hiking, tidepooling, natural history talks, and wildlife viewing.
  • Enjoy longer mornings without breaking camp or setting up your tent every day. Perfect for families with teens or novice kayakers who want to experience the magic of close orca encounters. Hydrophones are present on all tours so that you can listen to the underwater vocalizations of the orcas as well as see them breach and play.

  • View incredible wildlife including humpback whales, orcas, seals, black bears, and soaring bald eagles.
  • Experience an extraordinary island wilderness adventure off northern Vancouver Island offering secluded kayaking away from other people
  • Experience by kayak a marine environment few others share. Many places in the Broughton archipelago can only be reached by water - and many are too shallow for motorized boats
  • Experience family of killer whales cruising by camp and vibrant sea stars below the waterline are all frequent spectacles in this magical area. The islands are rich in native history.
  • The meeting point for our six days of adventure is the north Vancouver Island town of Port McNeill

  • Enjoy with wildlife-watching, we kayak in the heart of orca territory in Johnstone Strait.
  • Our basecamp location provides opportunity for hiking, tide-pooling, and learning about the natural history of the area.
  • Admire an entire ecosystem including starfish, anemones, porpoises, eagles, and sea birds.
  • All tours are fully-catered (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and happy hour) with gourmet meals prepared daily by our guides—from scratch. Each day, you enjoy scrumptious meals before laying your head on a pillow merely meters from passing orcas.
  • This trip is ideal for families with older teens, novice to intermediate kayakers craving adventure, and whale lovers who want to experience up-close encounters with orcas! Guides bring hydrophones on all tours so you can hear the orcas communicating underwater while watching them interact.
  • This trip is focused on observation and respect for the orca habitat, as we maintain our "Leave-No-Trace" ethics. All of our basecamps remain eco-friendly with temporary structures, allowing guests to enjoy the whales without harming their habitat.
