Bordering the Atlantic Ocean in far West Africa, Senegal is a former French colony whose capital, Dakar, resembles a mini-Paris with its wide leafy boulevards and outdoor cafes. But it’s very much an African country, where busy markets, sandy beaches and history – not wild animals – are the main attractions.
In regards to history, Senegal has a mixed past. Some tour take time to visit places such as Dakar, the island of Gorée, which is a former slaving post. Dakar and other main locations in Senegal are a sobering reminder of the past here. Cities like Saint-Louis show some of the brighter sides of colonialism, particularly the beautiful colonial architecture which still prevails.
