Ukraine in 1 Week

Day 1-4, Kiev

Day 1: Arrive in Kiev, and take some free time to explore the city. Spend some down time after traveling, adjusting to the time zone. Grab dinner on Khreshchatyk, Kiev’s most famous street.

Day 2: Walking Tour of Kiev: On this walking tour, make stops in all the main sights of Kiev, including Maidan Square, the St. Sophia Cathedral, as well as the Monastery of St. Michael Archangel.

Day 3: Chernobyl Day Tour: Located in the abandoned town of Pripyat, visit the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, home of one of the world’s worst nuclear incidents. When the reactor 4 exploded, lethal radiation spread across Pripyat and eventually further into Europe.

Day 4: Spend the morning visiting the National Museum of History in Ukraine, filled with archeological facts and exhibits to display different time periods of history. Don’t miss out on the views of the city from the Museum. In the afternoon, head over to the Pechersk Lavra Monastery. The Upper Lavra is filled with a bell tower (also offering great views), two museums, and a church. The Lower Lavra is where you can explore the caves and passageways. Take an overnight train to Lviv.

Day 5-7, Lviv

Day 5: Arrive in Lviv and settle into Lviv. Spend the after at the Lviv High Castle, sitting on top of Castle Hill. Spend the evening at the Lviv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, watching a ballet or Opera.

Day 6: Explore the Old Town of Lviv. Enjoy the colorful houses, the cafes that line the cobblestone streets, and some souvenir shopping. Lviv is listed as a UNESCO, known for its history and charm. Old Town is easily walkable.

Day 7: Spend your last morning grabbing breakfast at one of the Old Town’s cafes and doing any last minute shopping before departing Lviv to head back home.

Two Weeks in Ukraine Itinerary

Day 1-3, Odessa

Day 1: Arrive in Odessa, Ukraine’s third largest city, sitting on the black sea. Transfer to the hotel, and consider talking a walk along the seaside for dinner.

Day 2: Spend the morning walking along Prymorskyi, the tree-lined boulevard that runs along the black sea. Stop in at a café, or do some shopping as you wander through the town. Not to miss is the Potemkin Steps, which lead down to the Marine Passenger Terminal. There is a funicular that transports visitors between the boulevard and the terminal, or for those who want to feel the burn, get a great workout in by taking the stairs (there are 192 stairs!).

Day 3: Spend your last day in Odessa exploring the city parks, or walking through the charming old town. Since the town sits on the sea, there are plenty of beaches to check out if you want to spend some time near the water.

Day 4-9, Kiev

Day 4: Arrive in Kiev in the morning, and settle in to your accommodation.

Day 5: Spend some more time exploring Old Town, including a visit to the Golden Gates, the only remaining section of the original fortifications of Kiev.

Day 6: Kiev is filled with museums, so take a day to explore a couple of them. For art fans, there is the Mysetskyi Arsenal Art Quarter, that changes it’s exhibits seasonally to promote Ukraine culture. There is another art museum, the National Art Museum of Ukraine, that holds paintings and sculptures. There are over 40,000 exhibits.

Day 7: Chernobyl Day Tour: Visit Pripyat, home of one of the world’s worst nuclear accidents to date. Here is where the reactor number 4 exploded, leaving the town abandoned, resulting in a scene that looks like it could be an apocalypse. Learn about the history and explore this frozen-in-time town.

Day 8: Spend the day exploring Pechersk Lavra, a two lavra monastery complex. The upper Lavra is home to the Bell Tower (which has amazing views of the city), The Museum of Historical Treasures and the Museum of Micro-Miniatures, and a church. The lower lavra is where one will find the underground caves.

Day 9: Take a final morning walk through Kiev, before departing for the train to head to Lviv. After a 5-10 hour train ride (check the train times, as trains make various stops that will result in different travel lengths), you will arrive in Lviv, where you will settle into your accommodation after a day of travel.

Day 10-14, Lviv

Day 10: Spend the day exploring the historical center of Lviv, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend the evening mingling along fellow travels and familiarizing yourself with the city.

Day 11: Take a trip to Castle Hill, home of the High Castle. While it’s a bit of a climb, the views are worth it! The castle is about a 25-minute walk from the Market Square. Popular among the locals, this is a great opportunity for those looking to do some physical activity. Visit Rynok Square in the evening, and admire the colorful architecture that fill the streets.

Day 12: Visit Lviv Handmade Chocolate for a treat. Watch how the chocolate is made on the lower level, and find something to snack on or take home on the upper floor. Don’t miss a cup of coffee on the rooftop, that offers spectacular views of the city.

Day 13: Hop on board the Wonder Train, a train that travels through Lviv. The train make stops at all the main tourist attractions, and it’s an exciting way to see the city from another viewpoint. Take the opportunity to explore new sites that you’ve yet to see.

Day 14: Spend the last morning packing and doing any final activities, or enjoy a brunch in one of the cafes. Depart your accommodation and head to the airport to catch your flight back home.

Multi-Country (Moldova and Ukraine) Itinerary

Day 1-2, Moldova

Day 1: Arrive in Chisinau, and relax in your hotel to ease jet lag. Head out for an introduction dinner to Moldova.

Day 2: Explore the city of Chisinau by taking a walker tour, including visits to the Triumphal Arch and the Bell Tower. Stop by the central markets for produce and nuts. End the day visiting the Orhei Monastery. Take a two-hour bus ride to the Ukraine city Odessa. (Times may vary depending on how long it takes to cross the border).

Day 3, Odessa: Spend the morning on the seaside town, walking along the popular Prymorskyi boulevard and other streets that run along the Black Sea. Stop by the Potemkin steps, and walk down to the waterfront passenger terminal. For those who are looking to hang out by the water, there are plenty of beaches to soak up the sun. Take the overnight train to Kiev.

Day 4-5, Kiev

Day 4: After arriving in the morning, spend the afternoon exploring the Ukrainian capital. Explore Maiden Square, the central area of Kiev. Visit the Pechersk Lavra Monastery and explore the caves and narrow tunnels. Spend the evening taking a walk along Khreshchatyk, Kiev’s most famous street, for some shopping and to grab a bite to eat.

Day 5: Spend the day exploring more of Kiev, with a visit to the St. Sophia Cathedral, dating back to 1037. Check out the paintings that cover the wall, or go up the bell tower for incredible city views. Another stop for great city views is the National Museum of the History of Ukraine, where you can learn about the history of Ukraine. Board on overnight train to Lviv.

Day 6-7, Lviv

Day 6: After an early arrival in Lviv, start your morning with a visit to High Castle, located on castle hill. The castle offers panoramic views of the city. Spend the afternoon on the Wonder Train, a train that takes visitors to all the must-see sights of Lviv. This is a great way to get comfortable with the city.

Day 7: Spend your final day exploring the historical center of Lviv. The old town is listed as a UNESCO site, with its colorful architecture, churches, shops and restaurants lining the streets.
