What travelers are saying

"Hot & Unforgettable It's really hard to quantify the experience in a few short sentences. As one who has lived most of my life in urban environments, I was utterly shocked by the adjustment to 100% outdoor life, there were a lot of moments where I was convinced my domestic instincts weren't equipped for such an intense experience. Despite feeling unprepared and a little shocked by a myriad of intensities, (110 Degree Weather, 40 Degree Water, Hours of Uninterrupted Sun Exposure, Chugging Gallons of water to just stay hydrated enough to not get horribly ill) I have literally nothing but glowing remarks for both the trip as a whole and for the unbelievably accomodating and talented guides who transformed the experience from a journey of basic survival to an exciting and enjoyable adventure! Our Capitan (Ludkey, or Lucky) was amazing, charismatic and sincere, he found humor in awkward and scary moments, broke tension without removing the seriousness of our safety and health, and genuinely seemed to enjoy the unique experience with us, taking time to share his own secret spots and stories to make the experience richer! Hank, our second in command on our boat, was new to the trip but took incredible efforts to point out countless points of interest, you would see him each morning and day on the raft diligently studying guide books and following directions from Lucky, he used this knowledge and skill he was gaining each day to teach us many fun facts and on several occasions, keep us safe and healthy. The Tag team between Hank and Lucky made me feel like we were really being taken care of the entire time and that they were going above and beyond to make the trip not just bearable for us city folks, but special and unique! Scotty and Paco piloted the second boat (which we never traveled on) but even from limited interactions at Camp or during Frolicks I found them warm and helpful. Scotty took time to share his passion for music and songwriting with us, a few tunes are still stuck in my head ("Just a Caged Chicken!") and Paco, on multiple occasions, provided caring attention to even the most minor ailment (my partner got really sick the second day and her and Hanks efforts are what brought him back to 100% so he could enjoy the rest of the trip!) not to mention she literally dragged my big butt out of a hole I fell in and took time to give me Advil for the minor bangs I got in the process. I will genuinely never forget the experience, it absolutely had its ups and downs and if your not the outdoorsy wilderness type prepare for a transition period as your body acclimates, BUT, do not write this off because it's a little bit difficult or might push you a little. You will never experience the grand canyon with the same intimacy, you will never see stars so bright, you will never grow so close to a group of complete strangers this fast. It's absolutely not your "Reading a book on a beach" type of vacation, you will likely return home and feel you need another vacation, but if you're on the edge, if you're wondering if you should do it, my answer is, without hesitation, DO IT!"

What travelers are saying

"For me Outward Bound had entirely the opposite effect it hopes to. It left me doubting myself and with diminished sense of self worth. Due to all the talk of being strong and doing hard things and we can all do hard things etc, it made me blame myself. It wasn’t me. It was the experience."

What travelers are saying

"First, let me say our tour guide Tomomi S. is hands down THE best tour guide I’ve ever had - knowledgeable, fun and made great efforts to ensure that we were comfortable and happy (MTSobek tour guides are independent contractors. Tomomi also works for other Adventure/Tour companies) Secondly, Japan is beautiful, clean and the Japanese people are very welcoming. The hiking in the national parks was amazing. It could have been a truly five-star experience if MtSobek had not cut corners so egregiously. The website said (at the time) group tours are 5-22 people. The tour gets canceled if the minimum is not met. When I paid there were TWO other people booked-a mother and daughter duo. Shortly before our departure date I called to see if the tour would be cancelled. I wanted my money back but Mt Sobek was “pleased to say that the trip would not be canceled”. In other words, I could not get a refund. At the last minute a guy named Matt signed up so there were four of us. Five days into the trip Matt left and took a train back to Tokyo. I said to him “You realize Mt Sobek is not going to refund you”. He said, “I don’t care, Mt Sobek scammed us.” With tax, the tour costs $11,645 for 13 nights. For that price there is an expectation that the accommodations Mt Sobek chooses would be decent and clean. We all fully expected a ‘traditional Japanese experience’ which often means no private bath and 8 out of the 13 nights we slept on futon mats on the floor. However, Mt Sobek consistently booked us in the cheapest Ryokans (hotels) in each area in which we travelled. Most of these hotels were unclean and very out-dated. One Ryokan they booked us in was listed on a hotel website for $40 USD/night when there were much nicer accommodations nearby for $100 USD/night. (The Japanese yen is way down, the luxury Park Hotel in Tokyo was $200 USD/night. A comparable hotel would have been about $800/night in Austin.). We were the only people staying in several hotels that accomadated many more people. The most egregious example of MtSobek’s booking the cheapest rooms is when we were booked at a large traditional ski lodge at the base of a spectacular mountain. It was beautiful on the website but had two very different wings. One wing was modern, clean and beautiful with simple beds. The other wing was very old (similar to a cheap Motel 6 that had not been updated since the 1970’s). The carpet and bathrooms were disgusting and like many of the Ryocans where we stayed the futon mats seemed as though they had not been cleaned In 30 years. Only after our tour guide checked us in did we realize we had been booked in the cheap rooms. I asked Tomo why. Immediately someone from MtSobek reached out to me and said, “gosh, I’m sorry you did not realize you were going to have a traditional Japanese experience”. Really? “Traditional” experience depends upon one’s budget. In the US, “traditional” to some people may be the Marriott, a Motel 6 or the Four Seasons Hotels. We were paying for a Marriott experience and received the one-star Motel 6 experience. Upon arrival in Tokyo I expected to be met at the airport by a driver (as many tour companies do). However, several days before our arrival dates in Tokyo, MtSobek sent an email telling us how to locate taking a city bus from the bustling Tokyo airport. That is interesting if you do not speak Japanese. MtSobek cleverly uses great photography and elaborate descriptions of the national parks and the hiking while using terms like “traditional Japanese experience with tatami-mat sleeping” to disguise sub-standard accommodations. At one point we were looking on-line at the very hotel where we were staying and did not even recognize it from the website pictures. The hiking was amazing. The group size was disappointing with just the three of us. I would absolutely recommend a hiking tour through Japan, just not with MtSobek."

From the moment we landed to the moment we had to go through security to leave, we were completely taken care of. Our insider gave us great recommendations for restaurants and was very adaptable to any situation that arose."

What travelers are saying

"I always wanted to meet orangutans in the wild. Going with AW to Indonesia was the way to do it. We had great local guides, delicious food, and magical experiences. Everything was taken care of. The diverse group of women made the time even more enriching. I started as a solo traveler, but within a day I had 14 new friends. I can totally see traveling with AW again."

What travelers are saying

"Geoff helped my wife and I to put together an itinerary that customized to our particular interests and preferences. At the outset he asked us where we'd like to go and, after a small number of iterations, together we were able able to craft an itinerary that met our budget, touched on much of the places we wanted, and did not have us staying at a different resort each night. Before leaving for our trip we were given our itinerary and confirmation #'s/vouchers/contact #'s for all of our activities and hotels captured in an easy-to-use app that made it extremely easy to transition to the next point of our journey. He and his assistant were quick to respond to any questions we had along the way as well. Overall, we had a great stay and highly endorse Geoff and RealNZ for anyone planning a bespoke trip to NZ."

What travelers are saying

"I've just returned from my trip to China, a week ago. I've seen many-many interesting places of Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. But most of all i liked my 2-days trip to Longshen villages with my guide Frank from chinahighlights. The day before our trip has started, in Guilin, Frank met me in hotel and told about our journey. Next 2 days we visited traditional ancient chinese villages (the biggest from them are Ping'an and Dazhai), walking around them, saw the rice-terraces landscape (it was really unbelievable). Also we had a hiking between villages, and stayed at night at ZhongLiu village. I haven't seen any tourists in this village, even chinese tourists. It was fantastic cause we've seen real chinese life of local people, including, for example, planting vegetables, collecting tea). Very quiet, fresh air, natural food. Yes, in this village almost no shops, no souvenirs, but you dont need them. All around you a hundred times better. I advice all, who wants to see real chinese life, visit this place, especially this village, stay at night there. Thanks very much to my guide Frank and chinahighlights for this trip!"
