What travelers are saying

"First time we (mom and daughter) have done a tour and first time with on the go tours. What a special trip we had doing the 13 day Casablanca to Essaouira Morocco tour (26 Nov - 6 Dec 2023). We started the first 8 days doing the totally Morocco tour and the last few days at our own pace with down time in Essaouira. Jamal our guide led the tour from start to finish and took us safely on a culture filled journey. His knowledge of the country, it’s history and people was informative and inspiring. Every request was “no problem” and delivered with a smile and happy demeanour. Everything in Morrocco was “no problem” and we felt safe and looked after. We were driven in a comfortable coach with enough stops along the way to not feel long by our competent driver Suleman. The hotels, Riad and Dar were extremely comfortable with exceptional service. We would not have had the same experience travelling on our own, we felt as though we truly experienced Morocco. Everything was a highlight for us and we will definitely book another on the go tour in the future. If you wanting to see true Morocco we would strongly recommend doing this tour."

What travelers are saying

"It's hard to describe how lucky we are to have been able to work with Stephanie in planning our honeymoon to Japan. From the very beginning, Stephanie was friendly, flexible, and an absolute wealth of knowledge. We had several meetings with her leading up to our trip to come up with the perfect itinerary. Throughout this, Stephanie was mindful of our budget, without sacrificing anything. During our trip, Audley was available at all hours to help with anything and everything which was such a relief to know we had that resource available to us. I truly cannot imagine having planned this trip without all of Stephanie's guidance and knowledge- and cannot imagine taking another big trip like this without the help of Audley. Thank you again!"

What travelers are saying

"Great hotel and flexible about extending my flight, as I am attending a wedding outside of Paris. They would call back and email pretty promptly. However, BEWARE their condition and communication with the vendors/attractions with the trip is poor. They told me I would forfeit my airport transfer back which I was fine with BUT they didn’t cancel it, so the hotel lobby kept calling me, as well as an angry driver on my cellphone. The reason why I use travel agencies overseas is for them to coordinate everything for me especially when I call in for a special request - as that is their job. I also never received my toot bus ticket and had to call in for that. However, I did not receive my river cruise ticket. Doubt I’ll get a refund for that. The office hours are also crap and all over the place. Most likely will never use GVV again, even if I find a steal, because you got to be on your toes with this company. It is not smooth as you would think because you have to do everything yourself for requesting what you paid for or you don’t receive/have to do the explanations yourself."

What travelers are saying

"Because I have Stage 4 cancer, I chose to spend the extra money for trip insurance in case my cancer recurred. When a scan showed that it had, I cancelled my trip. I sent to them the medical documents from the Mayo Clinic confirming my new diagnosis. They sent me an email telling me my oncologist needed to fill in a form. I asked my oncologist to do that and I submitted it by fax on April 6th. When I didn’t hear anything, I sent them more medical documentation and asked them to please push forward my refund as I have travel expenses from a clinical trial coming up. Several days later I received an email that they needed further documentation from my doctor. How much more documentation do you need than the patient has stage 4 metastatic cancer and is starting a clinical trial??? This is heartless to me. Please don’t plan to travel through Road Scholar if you’re medically vulnerable!!"

Cairo Tour Selection Trips

  • While Cairo is a relatively safe city, it's also a tourist hub so pickpockets will be around during busy travel times. Keep your belongings close, don't carry large sums of cash or wear expensive jewelry
  • Summer is a popular time to visit, but it gets very, very hot! Stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun and sand with scarves, hats (or turbans), and lots sunscreen
  • Take advantage of your guides knowledge. One of the perks of many Egypt tours is learning about the incredible history of this ancient civilization from real archaeologists and Egyptologists. The context they provide will help bring your experience of Egypt and its many ancient sites alive!
  • One common scam in Egypt is that a local will tell you the attraction you are going to is closed because of a protest, and then invite you into their shop. Once in the shop they will pressure you to buy something. Just be aware of this ahead of time, though if you are already with a guide this should not be a problem.

Additional details

What to Wear in Cairo, Egypt

  • Bring a scarf for mosques, and be prepared to take off your shoes
  • Cover your shoulders and legs whenever you can in the main city. Men will be able to get away wearing shorts, but should still avoid tank tops. You will be able to wear less conservative clothing, along with bikinis and bathing suits if you go to very touristy areas, such as Red Sea resorts.
  • Wear lightweight, breathable materials. In particular, synthetics and linen, and cotton  will be your best friends.
  • Ditch your flip flops at home. Long walking distances and dirty streets mean that you will be more comfortable in a pair of breathable sneakers, or another comfortable closed-toe shoe.
  • Sunglasses are a great way to keep the sun out of your eyes, and if you’re a woman, avoid unwanted attention from men. Making eye contact can be seen as a sign of flirtation and encouragement, so sunglasses can prevent it from happening.

Weather and Climate in Cairo

In the summer months (from May to September), Cairo can be quite hot, with the high generally remaining in the low 90’s. For this reason, make sure to dress appropriately, bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sun cap if needed. The temperature does drop a little at night, often into the high 60’s, so bring a light sweater if needed.

In the winter, temperatures are cooler, though they remain warm. The coolest months are from December to February, where temperatures range between mid-to-high 60’s. At night, this can drop to the high 40’s, so be sure to bring a light jacket in preparation.

One thing you don’t have to worry about, regardless of the season, is rain. Although it does rain slightly more in the winter, the climate in Cairo is generally very dry and averse to precipitation.

Egyptian Food and Food in Cairo

Sampling Egyptian specialties she be a major component of your trip to Cairo. Egyptian restaurants are pretty uncommon in most of the Western world, so sampling the country’s food in its capital is sure to be an adventurous experience. In particular, you should try Egypt’s street food -- the homeland of shawarma, falafel, and kebab.

Some of the most important dishes to sample include Koshary (the “poor man’s” dish that has captured Egyptian hearts, it is made with macaroni, chickpeas, garlic, and a vinegar tomato sauce), Fiteer Baladi (a buttery filo dough round that can be made with savory or sweet toppings), and everything with a side of torshy (pickled vegetables).

There is also dessert: baklava, Um Ali, rice pudding, and basbousa are all worth their hype!
