What travelers are saying

"BUYER BEWARE!!! This company has a policy that if THEY cancel your trip…THEY get to keep your money and you get a credit the company. They cancelled my first trip..found out the hard way about their policy. Booked a trip…then had left over money so booked another…which they cancelled…again. Surprisingly…this time they offered a refund, but only gave me back the money I had put down…not what was left of “my credit”. So now I am forced to do business with a company I no longer wish to, that picks and chooses when to follow their own policy!! There are plenty of other travel agencies with similar tours…don’t give these guys your hard earned money for them to keep."

Visits

Ait Benhaddou, Casablanca, Marrakech

Highlights

  • Pre-2005, you wouldn't have been able to spend a night in holy moulay idriss if you weren't a muslim. these days you can stay with an awesome local family and eat their delicious home-cooked fare no matter your beliefs
  • It's easy to get lost in a labyrinth (think less david bowie film, more medieval maze), especially when there are enticing distractions at every turn. never fear, your local guide knows the city of fes like a lifelong friend
  • How about tasting some berber whisky? even better, how about learning how to prepare this traditional drink? learn from the experts on one of the exclusive demonstrations
  • Don't get in a hoof when you're offered a camel burger in meknes. like all good food in the medina, this exotic lunch is cooked before your eyes at a hole-in-the-wall restaurant
  • Sleep under the stars in the sahara, watch the sun rise over the dunes, ride a camel through the desert and explore the spectacular todra gorge. is this all a dream?

What travelers are saying

"This tour has amazing sites, good hotels in great locations, great pace BUT the tour director that was assigned to be with our small group added nothing to the experience. He did not give us any info, tell us about what we were seeing, give us any info at all. The only time he talked was to tell us when the next bathroom break would be. Apparently this is common for Globus to use retirees starting another chapter. Our guide was 76 and had no energy. Travel with Gate 1 or Intreped.... guides can make or break a tour."

What travelers are saying

"We have loved Gate 1 and always sing their praises. We've been on 7 tours with another one booked for fall. We were supposed to leave for Ecuador this week, however the country is in a 60 day state of emergency with the escape of 2 infamous gang members. Tourists are advised to stay indoors and there is a daily curfew from 11pm-5am. (our flight was to land at 11:15pm). Our trip included stays in 2 of the main cities of unrest. There have been shootings, car bombings, hostage taking, closing of embassies, and other countries issuing do not travel warnings. Other tour companies have cancelled tours or offered refunds or rescheduling. Travel insurance does not cover wars or civil unrest, but we are clearly afraid to go there. Both we and our travel agent have reached out multiple times with our concerns and asked if we could reschedule or get some sort of credit. We continue to get the same reply either in person or via email...Gate 1 has your safety as our highest priority and we feel you are safe ("they are not targeting tourists") and your itinerary should not be impacted. What? Their highest priority is $ and not our safety. There is no way that's the tour we anticipated. We cancelled the trip and took a 90% penalty, loss of deposit, and $276 airline penalty. It's a LOT of money, but we would have been terrified, and it's not worth getting hurt or worse. Sorry, but it's not the company I want to do business with in the future."

Casablanca Tour Selection Trips

  • When selecting your tour to Casablanca, either try to pick a tour where the stop is only a couple of days, or you are given a lot of free time. There aren’t too many tourist attractions in Casablanca, so it’s recommended that you take day trips elsewhere or only visit the city briefly.
  • Casablanca is Morocco’s largest city, so prepare yourself for the crowds as well as the high-end storefronts. Most tourists are familiar with cities more like Fez and Marrakech, and Casablanca surprises them.
  • If you love food, Casablanca is the stop on your tour of Morocco where you should splurge. There an abundance of high end and innovative restaurants in Casablanca which all compete with each other. They offer a wide selection of food, and are sure to have some interesting takes on typical Moroccan dishes.

Additional details

Best Time to Visit Casablanca

Casablanca has a mediterranean climate, with warm summers and mild winters. At the peak of summer (July and August), temperatures average at around 67 degrees Fahrenheit. In the dead of winter (January through February), it is usually about 47 degrees.

With that being said, nights are chillier in Casablanca, no matter the time of year. Even when you are visiting in the summer, prepare by bringing long pants and a sweater for the evenings.

Because Casablanca does not experience any major seasonal influx of tourists, the best time to visit the city is up to your discretion (or may hinge on the other places you intend to visit in Morocco or North Africa).

That being said, if you are on a cultural tour of Morocco, you may visit during the summer. Two of the city’s best festivals, Festival de Casablanca and the Feast of the Throne both take place during July.

What to Wear in Casablanca

Casablanca is unlike other cities in Morocco where a Western style of dress is completely acceptable, and common amongst the locals. While you may want to bring full body-covering clothing and a scarf to cover your hair if you plan to visit the Hassan II Mosque, don’t worry about your style of dress otherwise. P

ack clothing that is seasonally appropriate, a bathing suit if you plan (and you should plan!) to visit the gorgeous beaches near the city, and a warmer layer of clothing for at night.

Casablanca on your Tour of Morocco

Casablanca is the largest city in Morocco, and its known for its energy, a vibrant nightlife, and is a great way to see a glimpse of what modern Morocco is really like. Despite this, it doesn’t have too many outstanding tourist options.

If your primary interest in visiting Morocco is to see some of the country’s gorgeous Islamic architecture, to revel in its Arab traditions and explore its historic landmarks, Casablanca is not for you.

This doesn’t mean it isn’t worth it to include Casablanca on your Morocco tour. Casablanca is a great home base, or stopping point on a multi day tour of Morocco. Some of the best day trips can be taken from Casablanca; for example, a drive to Rabat (Morocco’s capital) can be reached in an hour’s drive, and the medieval towns El Jadida, Azemmour, Safi, and Oualidia are only a short trip away.

Casablanca’s trendy restaurant scene will be a welcome break for foodies touring Morocco. The food scene is much more developed than anything in Fez or Marrakech. Not only this, but Casablanca is one of the most liberal cities in Morocco, from dress to attitude. This means that you will be able to easily get yourself a good glass of wine and a beer -- or any other alcohol -- something not typical for the rest of Morocco.

Casablanca Travel Safety

In Casablanca, like much of Morocco, the biggest danger will be petty theft. Travelers should remain aware of their surroundings at all times, and never walk alone at night. Try to avoid wearing showy jewelry (fake or not), watches, and carrying your phone in your hand.

You should also be aware that drinking alcohol on the street is illegal, and being publicly intoxicated is highly frowned upon. Scams are also common in Casablanca, so be sure to negotiate ahead of time with everything from cab fares to the price of your meals when eating at a hole-in-the-wall type restaurant.
