Denmark may be small, but what it lacks in size makes up for in historical triumph and cultural value. With its medieval castles, unspoiled countryside, and exciting attractions, this Scandinavian country is a fairytale destination for any traveler. You will fall in love with the food, become immersed in the Danes “hygge” way of living (that indescribable feeling of cozy contentment from relaxing and sipping that glass of wine with friends), and understand for yourself why Denmark has been voted most liveable city in the world.
Summer is a spectacular time to visit Denmark, specifically the months of May through August when the temperature is warm, days are at their longest, and the countryside is in full bloom. Museums and attractions will be open longer because the sun sets at a later time. You can also enjoy more outdoor travel like kayaking and biking without having to brave the freezing cold.
If you are traveling for the holidays and are looking for a winter wonderland feel, then Denmark is the place to be. This country absolutely loves Christmas. Towns are decked out in decorations throughout November and December and parties are organised months in advance.
If you're there during the first day of November, also known as J Day, bars, pubs and discos will be jam-packed with partiers in elf costumes and Santa hats. On this day at precisely 8:49 PM, the famous brewing company Tuborg releases its annual Christmas beer, known as julebryg, and the holiday season officially begins.
Depending on what time of year you visit, your attire will vary. Although, no matter what season it is, Denmark's weather can be extremely unpredictable. During summer, the climate is mild so be prepared to layer when the clouds roll in and the sun disappears. Always pack an umbrella and rainboots or waterproof shoes just in case.
For summer, pack active wear for riding bikes and other outdoor activities. Bring light layers like tank tops and sweatshirts. Also include dressy clothes for the lovely restaurants and bars that you visit at night.
During winter you will need heavy coats, beanies, scarves, and gloves. Pack warm layers of clothes and long sleeved cotton or wool tops. It rains heavily during this season and sometimes Denmark will experience snowfall so pack accordingly.
If you forget to pack items do not fret, Denmark is one of the hottest design nations in the world. Strøget, famous for its shopping, is one Europe's longest pedestrian streets. Stretching almost a mile long, it consists of low to high end shops with something for everyone.
Denmark is included as one of the four countries that make up Scandinavia, therefore it is common that itineraries will include visits to them as well:
Sweden: Outdoor activities are big in Sweden due to its lush green space. Activities like hiking, biking, cycling, and kayaking are very popular amongst the Swedes. With its’ archipelagos and Northern Lights, Sweden truly is a mystical Nordic destination.
Norway: Beautiful fjords and a sun that doesn't set all summer, known as the “midnight sun”, makes Norway a picture perfect getaway. You will have much more time to visit museums and take part in Norwegian attractions due to the longer days.
Finland: A land of placid lakes, ski resorts, and wild nature to explore. You will meet some of the kindest people here and experience adventure beyond belief.
Iceland: Although Iceland is not considered part of Scandinavia, it is very close geographically and the culture and history are also very similar to that of other scandinavian countries, so you may travel here as well. The lava fields, geysers, volcanoes, hot springs, and giant glaciers make Iceland a remarkable destination.
