What travelers are saying

"We purchased two backpacks from Rick Steves Europe. One of them arrived damaged and unusable. Their website says that you must contact them if you receive damaged merchandise. I have attempted to email them through their website and I have left 3 voicemails (nobody answers the phone, ever!) and nobody has contacted me back. At this point, it seems like I've been ripped off. Buyer beware. Extremely disappointed."

What travelers are saying

"As a retired Environmental Studies Professor, our tour guide Dr. Don Snow is widely well read and has thorough knowledge of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It was obvious from the very beginning that his teacher instinct wishing to impart his vast knowledge with us runs deep in his blood. Having lived in MT for many years, Don is intimate with local lores and history, as well as its flora and fauna. Five of us tested positive for Covid during our tour. Nick, our tour manager and the "fixer" of all things and ASHT Company did a phenomenal job of guiding us through the difficult situation."

What travelers are saying

"I’ve gone on a few trips by MGTC and all of them have been fantastic. They know where you wanna go, who you want to take you or be your guide, if anything goes awry you call them and they fix it. They make your days away wonderful, and stress free and planning your dream trip is easy! Russ and Suzie have planned all my trips. I can’t tell you how many times I thought I stepped foot into a calendar or computer wall paper! It’s the best value per dollar you can get for travel!"

What travelers are saying

"A company's character is not determined by how it handles day to day operations, but how it handles a crisis. This company fails miserably when Acts of God happen! We are on what was supposed to be a Danube River Cruise from Prague to Budapest...we never sailed at all, even though Viking sailed for the last 3 days. Avalon chose to bus us everywhere. They didn't communicate well at all. Information was withheld and our cruise director, Helmut, would turn and walk away from guests if he didn't want to answer questions. This was my 3rd Globus/Avalon trip but it will be the last. They excel in bus trips but not river trips. They don't know how to handle weather issues."

Eastern Europe Tour Selection Trips

  • Plan well in advance to obtain any necessary visas or other travel documents for countries that require them.
  • With more than 20 countries to cover, Eastern Europe can be the focus of numerous tours; it may help to separate them into geographic categories.
  • A number of Eastern European countries, including Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, can be visited via Danube river cruises.
  • The three Baltic nations (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) make for a compact but sight-filled tour destination.
  • Consider a Balkans tour of some of the former Yugoslav states: Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, and Montenegro.
  • The East Central European nations of Hungary and the Czech Republic are both very popular, but don’t overlook neighboring Poland and Slovakia.
  • Russia, the largest nation of Eastern Europe, is a trip unto itself.

Additional details

Who will enjoy traveling in Eastern Europe?

Each Eastern European country has something to offer every traveler regardless of age or mobility level. A traveler looking forward to lots of physical activity can delight in the abundance of natural wonders present in Eastern Europe’s diverse ecosystem. Go hiking through one of the many national parks, do water sports along the southern coast, or explore ancient underground caves.

For a more relaxed visit, take in the traditional squares central to many major cities, and enjoy the unique culinary landscape of each country. The culturally minded can soak in the ancient history of the dozens of churches and cathedrals across the region. No matter your vision, Eastern Europe has something for you.

When is the best time to visit Eastern Europe?

Eastern Europe’s tourism season is from May through September, with July and August being the peak months. For a summer visit that avoids the largest of the crowds, plan to visit in May or June. Travelers may also want to visit in September or October, although the weather will be cooler and the hours of attractions may be limited.

Be sure to check the hours of your top attractions before planning a trip in the off-season. The winter months are, of course, the best for snow sports, but areas outside of mountain ranges tend to shut down for the season so don’t plan your visit for the winter if you won’t be doing winter sports.

Common Eastern Europe Tour Routes

Eastern European tours range from multi-week tours that travel to most of the countries in the region, to shorter tours that focus on just a couple countries. Spend a month traveling all the way from Greece to Amsterdam along an Eastern European route, spend two weeks exploring Croatia and Slovenia, or spend a week just discovering Albania.

Many travelers choose to cruise down the Danube River in order to visit eight Eastern European countries it travels through without straying from one route. Eastern European tours often stick to one region such as the Balkans or the Baltics, so it is helpful to decide which regions you would like to visit while choosing your tour.

Is Eastern Europe Safe?

Eastern Europe is as safe as most developed countries. If you use good judgement while traveling, you won’t likely find yourself in a dangerous situation. Some common sense tips include keeping your valuables close, don’t pay bribes to government officials, stay on established hiking paths, and only ride in taxis with working meters.
