What travelers are saying

"I've travelled with Intrepid in Vietnam, Morocco, Nepal and Egypt and had a brilliant time every time. The experience is better than most tours as you are in a small group that goes a bit more 'off the beaten track', and you don't get taken to endless shopping opportunites (i.e. a cousin's carpet shop). They also have higher ethics than most travel companies, they contribute to local charities and they avoid animal use (donkeys etc) where possible. The tour leaders we have had have all been wonderful, knowledgable and relaxed, with good english."

Inca Trail Tour Selection Trips

  • The Inca Trail is the most famous of three major treks one can take to get to Machu Picchu. The other two are the Salkantay Trek and the Lares Trek.
  • In order to protect both the trail itself and the site at Machu Picchu, only 500 people per day are permitted on the Inca Trail. For this reason, it’s important to book well in advance!
  • You cannot hike the trail independently. You must go with a guide, which you can arrange in country, but if you do this, beware of scams. A more sure way is to book a guided trip with a reputable company, of which there are many.
  • Prepare for the altitude! If you’re not used to being in high altitude, it can be a shock, and put a damper on your whole experience. One good option is spending a few days in Cusco to acclimate.
  • If you have the opportunity, it’s also a good idea to train in the months leading up to the trek. Thousands of people hike the trail every year - of all fitness levels, but being in shape will make the trek easier and more enjoyable.
  • Be sure to break in your hiking boots well before embarking on your trek!
