  • October through early December, endangered Southern Right whales and their calves cruise the sheltered waters of Gulfo San Jose, located between the peninsula and the Patagonian mainland, where we navigate unobtrusively in our kayaks for close encounters with the whales, elephant seals, Magellanic penguins, southern sea lions, and dolphins.
  • See the whales come here for mating and giving birth, because the protected water in the gulf is quieter and warmer than in the open sea. It’s the best place in the world to watch the nursing mothers and their playful calves up close from the shore and your kayak. Breaching, fin-slapping and tail-lobbing, the highly social whales will captivate your attention with their behaviour.
  • Our advice: Spend an extra day in Buenos Aires (most international flights come through here) before and after your trip.
  • The world's largest population of Southern right whales. Visits to a Magellanic Penguin colony and an elephant seal rookery. Overnight in Faro Punta Delgado Country Inn, a Patagonian Landmark.

I need not have worried, under the expert guidance of Monica (who amazingly had been a guide on our first trip) and Fabian our family group were wowed by whales that swam close, sky-hopped, breached and swam to our boat, rubbed against it, looked us in the eye mammal-to-mammal and then let us rub their skin. Wow oh wow! My niece even discovered that one whale had shared two of its sealice with her! Simply amazing and thanks to Monica and Fabian for sharing their knowledge, enthusiasm and expertise with us, and to Vicky for the excellent food."

  • Encompassing 65 miles of road-less coastline and offshore islands between Loreto and La Paz on the peninsula's eastern coast, this is Baja's classic sea kayak expedition. This coastline is one of the most remote and sparsely populated areas in all of Baja.
  • The Sierra Giganta Range plunges into the Sea of Cortez, effectively isolating the area from the rest of the peninsula and creating a stunningly beautiful backdrop the entire trip.
  • We'll make camps on beaches that dot the base of these magnificent mountains. Canyon hikes take us into the desert interior, while kayaking allows an intimate exploration of the many coves and sea caves.
  • The clear waters of the Sea of Cortez teem with colorful life, and the snorkeling around the shallow reefs and vertical ledges is excellent. We see pods of dolphins, as well as massive whales
  • You'll paddle past towering volcanic peaks, miles of unexplored beaches and forests of giant cardon cactus. Prehistoric-looking frigate birds circle high above while squadrons of pelicans glide across the glassy water.

Andy Freeman from Audley Travel organised an excellent trip starting in Cape Town for 5 days then driving down the Garden Route stopping in Swellendam, Plettenberg Bay, Wilderness, Oudtshoorn, Franschoek and finishing with the most wonderful Safari at Rock Fig which was excellent. There wasn't one thing we could fault about the whole 17 day trip (albeit we may have changed a couple of things) but it was outstanding. Thanks so much Andy and would 110% recommend it to anyone.
