What travelers are saying

"We purchased two backpacks from Rick Steves Europe. One of them arrived damaged and unusable. Their website says that you must contact them if you receive damaged merchandise. I have attempted to email them through their website and I have left 3 voicemails (nobody answers the phone, ever!) and nobody has contacted me back. At this point, it seems like I've been ripped off. Buyer beware. Extremely disappointed."

What travelers are saying

"My wife and I were on the Smithsonian Journeys Splendors of Australia and New Zealand between April 13 and May 2, 2018. Smithsonian is rated by this site as Luxury travel. However, Smithsonian "farms out" the logistics for their trip to Odysseys Unlimited. Odysseys booked within country air travel with the lowest cost air carriers. Flights were cancelled from Ayers Rock to Sydney and from Queenstown New Zealand to Rotorua. Another flight was significantly delayed so that we did not arrive at our Christchurch destination until 2:00 am, making for a really tired next day. Odysseys Unlimited compensated us $400 per person for missing a day in Sydney and paid for an excursion in Auckland for missing Rotorua. This was wholly inadequate, given that these were highlights of the trip. In addition, our tour guide was rude to several people on the trip. If Smithsonian Journeys is truly a luxury travel outfit, as we had believed, then they would not be farming out travel logistics to such a chinch company as Odysseys Unlimited. We will think twice about traveling with Smithsonian again, and so should others."

What travelers are saying

"Globus states that their tours feature "great hotels" and "amazing food". I can tell you first hand that this is literally false advertising and totally not true. I just returned from my trip yesterday and have taken pictures of the filthy carpet and boarded up windows of my various hotel rooms some facing the trash dumpsters and porta potties and others in the basement level reeking of mold and mildew with no air conditioning or water pressure. Our tour guide, Charlie was a history buff who treated everyone as if they were a student in his classroom and were only allowed to speak when spoken to and it was made clear from the start that all questions were best kept to themselves as he and he alone would decide when you were to be informed of that days schedule. Half the time we rode in coach unaware of the length of time until our next stop and even where and when our next stop for lunch would be. Early on in my trip, I contacted my travel agent to please help and she immediately reached out to Globus and nothing changed... the sub par hotels and tour guides dismissive attitude continued for 24 days. I am currently contemplating my next step of action to receive reimbursement for this false advertising as well trying to help others by sparing them of having this same experience."

Rome Tour Selection Trips

  • Wear decent walking shoes. That way, you can comfortably spend a day clambering over ruins and walking up and down cobblestone city streets. These are not a task for sandals (even if they were the footwear of choice for the gladiators).
  • Cover up your shoulders and legs when entering religious sites. Many sites provide paper gowns at the entrance for visitors, though, as a woman, carrying around a small cardigan or a lightweight scarf that you can drape over your shoulders when you enter a cathedral.
  • Rome can become extremely hot during the summertime, particularly between the months of July and August. If you want to avoid the baking sun, work with your tour guide so that the bulk of your activities in the early mornings and late evenings, or visit during the cooler months of spring and fall.
  • If your tour of Italy spends multiple days in Rome, your guide will likely suggest that you get a Roma Pass. The Roma Pass offers two or three day passes that include entry to museums and transport, which are a good deal for those who want to see everything, fast.
  • Keep an eye out for pickpockets in crowded area, and keep your belongings safe.
  • Eat your fill of creamy gelato and cheesy pizzas on your tour, you will enjoy yourself so much more if you aren't thinking about the calories. The diet can wait! After all, when in Rome...

Additional details

Best Time to Visit Rome

As one of the most popular tourist destinations on Earth, Rome is one of those cities where the time you decide to visit can really make or break your trip. Rome is well known to get very crowded, especially during the summer months when the temperatures skyrocket and the number of people at attractions and in the streets can be overwhelming.

The best seasons to visit are the Fall and the Spring, when temperatures are still pleasant, but the number of tourists are reduced. The winter is also a great time to visit and experience the many pop up festivals and Christmas markets -- temperatures, on average, don’t go below the mid-50’s (Fahrenheit), so even in the coldest months you won’t have to worry about harsh weather or snow.

Food Tours in Rome

Italy is well known to be the land of pizza, pasta, and wine -- among many other delicacies -- and so it make sense that thousands of tourists flock to Italy each year on food & wine tours. Rome, in particular, is a great destination for a food tour.

However, taking a food tour in Rome isn’t about just trying the more authentic version of the dishes you love. It’s also about expanding your palate by trying new foods, and learning the history and process of making the things you get to eat. A good food tour will take you beyond margherita pizza and cannolis, and introduce you to different and unique tastes.

For example, you may not be eating main courses exclusively on your food tour. You may, instead, learn how to taste Italian wine, and distinguish between its varieties. You might also try different kinds of olive oil and balsamic vinegars, two products that Italians are very proud of.

Day Trips from Rome

If you’re going on a tour of Italy, you may find yourself based in Rome. Rome is on the West Coast of central Italy, and while you will, of course, spend some time touring this world renowned travel location and all it has to offer, it’s likely that you will also go on several day-long excursions, and even travel to different parts of Italy.

If you are going on a private tour of Italy or customizing your itinerary, here are some examples of the best day trips from Rome:

  1. Pompeii - This illustrious archaeological site is on many a traveler’s bucket list, and is only slightly south of Rome. The complete town takes about 3 hours to tour completely, but it’s worth the time and effort.
  2. Florence - Florence can be reached in under two hours, and if you don’t have time to experience the city in full, it definitely deserves at least a day trip while you’re staying in Rome. Seeing the Duomo, and visiting the Firenze Musei should top your list of activities.
  3. Ostia Antica - Today, Ostia Lido is one of the best preserved ruins of a Roman sea port, and is currently a well-maintained archaeological site.
  4. Tivoli - Take a break from the rush of citylife to see this beautiful small town in the countryside. Tivoli is well known for its elaborate fountains and beautiful gardens.
  5. Cerveteri - This town is best known for its city of Etruscan tombs, which lie just outside of the main town. You can visit the local museum to learn more about the Etruscans before you visit.
  6. Orvieto - This beautiful medieval town is perched on the hilltops, and its cobblestone streets are lined delicious restaurants and cute boutiques. It is also home to the Orvieto Duomo, a massive cathedral featuring famous facade.
