Travel Map

Day 1 Bangkok

With exotic markets, weaving tuk-tuks and serene temples, Bangkok is an exciting city to start the adventure. Shop up a storm, enjoy a massage or savour the flavours of Thai cuisine.

Day 2-4 Siem Reap

Cross the border into Cambodia and travel to Siem Reap. While here, a visit to the temples of Angkor Wat is a must. Explore these epic structures by day and hit Siem Reap’s lively markets by night.

Day 5 Kompong Cham

Enjoy the fusion of frontier charm and French-colonial character of Kompong Cham. Why not hire a bike and visit Koh Paen island or, if feeling energetic, head into the surrounding region to uncover the myths of nearby mountain temples.

Day 6 Phnom Penh

Travel to the capital city of Phnom Penh. In free time, pay respects at the Killing Fields and Choeung Ek Museum, visit the glimmering Silver Pagoda or haggle for a bargain at the art deco-designed central market, Psar Thmei.

Day 7 Homestay

Head out into the Cambodian countryside for a village homestay. Staying with a friendly local family, this is a unique opportunity to experience everyday rural life and enjoy a home-cooked Khmer meal.

Day 8-9 Sihanoukville

Find a spot on the secluded beaches that fringe Sihanoukville or take a boat tour out to nearby islands. If mangrove forests, monkeys and exotic birds appeal, enjoy a tropical safari in Ream National Park.

Day 10 Phnom Penh

Brush off the sand and take a public bus back to the capital. Find graphic reminders of Cambodia's tragic history in Tuol Sleng Museum, or take some time out on a visit to Seeing Hands, where massages are performed by the visually impaired.

Day 11-12 Ho Chi Minh

Relax aboard a final bus ride to Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City, where the adventure comes to an end amid swarms of motorbikes. Spend some time exploring this fascinating, fast-paced metropolis.

Day 13-14 Mekong Delta

Cruise the mighty Mekong River before spending the night with local friends on a homestay by the water.

Day 15-16 Nha Trang

Bask on Nha Trang's golden beaches, meander through local markets or explore the ancient Cham Towers. In the evening, why not feast on scrumptious seafood at one of the local restaurants.

Day 17-19 Hoi An

Be enthralled by Hoi An, a charismatic port town virtually untouched by time. Why not wander through the atmospheric Phung Hung Old House or check out the carp-shaped rainspouts on the roof of Quan Cong Temple. Get a dose of rural charm on a bike ride or deck yourself out in tailor-made garments.

Day 20-22 Hue

Home to an array of ancient imperial ruins, Hue is also the centre of Vietnamese Buddhism and the birthplace of degustation-style Vietnamese cuisine. Visit the Forbidden Purple City, cruise down the Perfume River on a dragon boat and maybe wander through the bustling Dong Ba market.

Day 23 Hanoi

Soak up the effervescence of the Old Quarter on an orientation walk and hear the local legends about majestic Hoan Kiem Lake. Afterwards, perhaps make some colourful purchases at Pho Hang Gai or Dong Xuan markets.

Day 24 Halong Bay

Enjoy a boat trip out in Halong Bay. See magnificent limestone islands rise up out of the emerald waters and be awestruck by the beauty of this secluded harbour. Enjoy a delicious seafood lunch on board before heading into Halong City for the night.

Day 25-26 Hanoi

There's time for a final Vietnamese feast on return to Hanoi.

Day 27-28 Vientiane

Slow down to the pace of Laos's capital, sleepy Vientiane, where the colourful market stays open all day and dusty riverside paths are packed with friendly children, dogs and chickens. A great way to round off a day of sightseeing is by dining at one of the stilt restaurants set up high above the Mekong.

Day 29-30 Vang Vieng

Be wowed by the gorgeous setting of Vang Vieng, which is surrounded by stunning limestone karst mountains. Relax in a chilled out cafe or dive into the river to escape the heat.

Day 31-33 Luang Prabang

Nestled in the hills of northern Laos, lovely Luang Prabang is dotted with French colonial architecture and ornate temples. Take a dip in the turquoise waters beneath the beautiful Kuang Si Falls, perhaps stroll through the local market, visit Royal Palace or climb Mount Phousi to watch the sun set over the mystic Mekong.

Day 34 Pakbeng - Mekong River

Float gently down the Mekong on a riverboat, travelling with local passengers and docking at tiny Pak Beng for the night.

Day 35 Chiang Khong

Cruise further along the Mekong to the charming town of Chiang Khong. Admire the picturesque surrounds and soak up the chilled-out vibe as you meander through this market town.

Day 36-38 Chiang Mai

Home to over 300 temples and a massive night market, Chiang Mai is packed full of things to see and do. Indulge in a traditional Thai massage, take a lesson at a cooking school or perhaps learn the secrets of kickboxing.

Day 39-40 Bangkok

Wind up the adventure in the frenzied streets of Bangkok - a thriving metropolis that stands as one of the most influential cities in South East Asia. Enjoy free time to explore labyrinthine shopping malls, wander the grounds of the Grand Palace or take to the cities khlongs to see this energetic city from an entirely different perspective.

The Intrepid Travel Experience

If you’re looking for adventure, you’ve come to the right place. For the past 25 years, we’ve been taking small groups of travelers on unforgettable trips around the world. What makes them unforgettable? Take a look for yourself and discover the Intrepid experience.

Our travelers have three styles of tour to choose from: Basix, Original and Comfort. Each has a different level of inclusions and accommodation, but all have unforgettable real life experiences as part of the package. Travellers can also choose themed trips, such as Family, Sailing or Food, to suit their interests.

Our group size has an average of just ten travellers, which allows us to get off the beaten track, use local accommodation and transport, and really get to know the culture. It also ensures we are contributing to the local economy; by choosing local suppliers we were able to keep AUD 60 million in local economies in 2012. We’re also working hard to reduce our carbon footprint and were the first in our sector to introduce carbon offset trips. This, along with our many corporate sustainability activities, has meant we’re one of the travel industry’s leaders in responsible travel.

Why Intrepid?

  •   Small groups - average of 10 people per trip
  •   Sustainability - pioneers for the industry
  •   Local leaders - authentic perspectives
  •   Local transport - get close and personal
  •   Local accommodation - experience real living
  •   Intrepid travelers - like-minded companions

History

Intrepid Travel has come a long way since its beginnings in 1989. From two university friends, a typewriter and a kitchen desk, it is now a proud member of The Intrepid Group, taking over 100,000 travelers every year.

Intrepid Travel is part of The Intrepid Group of companies, alongside leading small group adventure companies Peregrine, Urban Adventures and PEAK DMC.

Despite growing into a global business with over 1,000 staff based all over the world and over 800 different trips across every continent, we’ve remained devoted to the same grassroots values and responsible travel philosophies that we had at the very beginning.

Values

On every trip we operate and in every interaction we have with a client, supplier or local, we live our core values everyday:

  • Integrity – Doing the right thing
  • Responsible – Think global, act local
  • Growth – Stakeholders in our own success
  • Innovation – Thriving on new ideas and embracing change
  • Fun – It’s engrained into who we are and what we do
  • Passion – We are inspired by the work we do and the trips we offer

Why we love this operator
They’re very committed to sustainable and responsible tourism and contribute to important initiatives like climate action.
What they’re known for
Small group tours for active and adventurous travelers at a range of different price points and service levels.

On rare occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our usual accommodation. A similar standard of accommodation will be used in these instances. TWIN SHARE / MULTI SHARE BASIS Accommodation on this trip is on a twin/multishare basis. Please note there may be times where facilities will be shared rather than ensuite and rare occasions when you share a room with passengers travelling on different Intrepid trips than your own. CHECK-IN TIME Throughout the trip we request that our hotels prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination. PRE/POST TRIP ACCOMMODATION If you've purchased pre-trip or post-trip accommodation (if available), you may be required to change rooms from your trip accommodation for these extra nights.WINDOWLESS ROOMS: Some hotels in Vietnam and Cambodia have windowless rooms, or windows that don't necessarily have a view. This is often due to high population density in large cities, however local building standards also don't require rooms to have windows. We do request rooms with windows, however they aren't always available.DAY ROOMS & EARLY CHECK IN Please note in some destinations we will provide use of day rooms. These rooms are provided for shared group use before or after overnight train journeys. We have some days where we arrive at our destination before check in time and a day room is not included. If you have booked a Single Supplement for your trip, it will not apply to these day rooms. Your leader may be able to assist you in booking a room for your sole use (depending on availability) until our regular trip rooms become available for an additional charge. Please talk to your leader at the Group Meeting if this is a service you would like to request.

Guides
All Intrepid group trips are accompanied by one of our group leaders. The aim of the group leader is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. Intrepid endeavours to provide the services of an experienced leader however, due to the seasonality of travel, rare situations may arise where your leader is new to a particular region or training other group leaders. Your leader will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, recommend great local eating venues and introduce you to our local friends. While not being guides in the traditional sense you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the places visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious and social aspects. At Intrepid we aim to support local guides who have specialised knowledge of the regions we visit. If you were interested in delving deeper into the local culture at a specific site or location then your leader can recommend a local guide service in most of the main destinations of your trip.
Requirements
Some easy physical activities included in your trip. No physical preparation is required to make the most of the journey. ,
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is compulsory for all our trips. We require that, at a minimum, you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. We strongly recommend that the policy also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects. When travelling on a trip, you won't be permitted to join the group until evidence of travel insurance and the insurance company's 24 hour emergency contact number has been seen by your leader. If you have credit card insurance your group leader will require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number and emergency contact number rather than the bank's name and credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details prior to arriving in-country. Please go to our website for links to various travel insurance providers:
Visa requirements
Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller. The visa requirements for your trip vary depending on where you are from and where you are going. As a general rule most countries expect that you will have at least 6 months' validity on your passport. On arrival visitors may be asked to present return tickets and evidence of means to cover your intended stay. We keep the following information up to date as much as possible, but rules do change - it's important that you check for yourself. Residents from other countries must consult the relevant embassies or your travel agent.
Health & Safety
Many national governments provide a regularly updated advice service on safety issues involved with international travel. We recommend that you check your government's advice for their latest travel information before departure and ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all areas your itinerary covers. Please refer to our website's safety page for links to major travel advisories and updates on safety issues affecting our trip. We strongly recommend the use of a neck wallet or money belt while travelling, for the safe-keeping of your passport, air tickets, cash and other valuable items. Leave your valuable jewellery at home - you won't need it while travelling. Many of our hotels have safety deposit boxes, which is the most secure way of storing your valuables. A lock is recommended for securing your luggage. Your leader will accompany you on all included activities, however during your trip you'll have some free time to pursue your own interests, relax and take it easy or explore at your leisure. While your leader will assist you with the available options in a given location, please note that any optional activities you undertake are not part of your Intrepid itinerary, and Intrepid makes no representations about the safety of the activity or the standard of the operators running them. Please use your own good judgement when selecting an activity in your free time. Please also note that your Leader has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the trip itinerary if it's deemed necessary due to safety concerns. For more details on the type of conditions and safety standards you can expect on your trip, please refer to Intrepid's operational safety policy on our website. We recommend that you take a moment to read through this information before travelling, and would appreciate any feedback on how well it's being implemented in the field: WATER SAFETY: Please take care when taking part in any activities in the ocean, river or open water, where waves and currents can be unpredictable. It's expected that anyone taking part in water activities is able to swim and have experience in open water. All swimmers should seek local advice before entering the water. LIFE JACKETS: While life jackets are generally available on water craft, there may be occasions where they are not provided and child size life jackets are not always readily available. If travelling with children and this safety issue concerns you we will be able to advise alternative methods of transport (where available) for you to travel to the next destination. You can choose to travel independently for this leg of the journey. This would be at your own expense. CYCLING: Please note that helmets aren't provided for the sightseeing on bicycles. Please consider bringing a helmet from home if you want to wear a helmet on these activities. PETTY THEFT AND PERSONAL SAFETY: While travelling there is always the risk of pick-pocketing and petty theft, particularly in the more touristy cities. We recommend that you exercise caution when walking alone at night and encourage you to walk together and only on main, well-lit thoroughfares. Be particularly vigilant on public transport. Simple measures like carrying your day pack on your front, not hanging your bag over the back of your chair or on the floor and wearing a money belt will reduce any chance that your valuables should go missing. MOTORBIKE BAG SNATCHING: Be particularly aware of motorbike bag snatching, especially in the bigger cities, such as Ho Chi Minh City. There has been a recent spate of bag/purse snatchings in Sihanoukville. They normally occur at night and often the assailant is on a motorbike. Travellers are reminded to leave all valuables at the hotel in a security envelope/safety box and to only take out money you will need for the evening. Carrying a bag can make you a target, if you choose to carry a bag, please ensure the bag is slung across the body. Don't walk alone if returning late at night and consider taking a 'remork' (tuk tuk) instead. TRAFFIC AND DRIVING ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD: Depending on where you come from please note that drivers in this part of the world may drive on the opposite side of the road from what you are used to. Look both ways before crossing any road. Traffic can be a little more chaotic than you might be used to at home. Be aware! SEAT BELTS: Please be aware that local laws governing transportation safety may differ from those in your home country and not all the transport which we use is able to provide seat belts. FIRE PRECAUTIONS: Please be aware that local laws governing tourism facilities in this region differ from those in your home country and not all the accommodation which we use has a fire exit, fire extinguishers or smoke alarms. SWIMMING POOLS: You may stay at hotels with unfenced pools and no life guard on duty. BALCONIES: Some hotel balconies don't meet UK standards in terms of the width of the balcony fence being narrower than 10cm. RENTING MOTORBIKES, QUAD BIKES AND JET SKIS There have been incidents of scams involving rental of motorbikes and jet skis in areas frequented by tourists and expatriate residents in some regions of Cambodia including the town of Sihanoukville. Due to safety concerns we do not recommend renting motorbikes, quad bikes or jet skis in Cambodia. www.intrepidtravel.com/safety
Meals Included

Meals introduction

While travelling with us you'll experience the vast array of wonderful food available in the world. Your group leader will be able to suggest restaurants to try during your trip. On our camping trips we often cook the region's specialities so you don't miss out. To give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat, generally not all meals are included in the trip price. This also gives you more budgeting flexibility. As a rule our groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each other's company. There's no obligation to do this though.

Style descriptions

Our Basix style trips are designed for travellers who want exceptional value, plenty of free time and having the flexibility to choose where and how their time and money is spent. By working plenty of free time into the itineraries and keeping many of the activities optional, we aim to make travel possible for those on even the most slender of budgets. After all, why pay for an activity or excursion you wouldn’t otherwise be interested in? Or a level of comfort you don’t require? As a wise person probably once said, a bed's just a bed when there's exploring to be done.
