Day 1 Arrive Saint Bernard Pass

Today you will make your own way to the first hotel in Saint-Rhemy-en-Bosses at the foot of the Saint Bernard Pass. The Great Saint Bernard Pass, located high in the Swiss Alps, rich in history. This pass was quite treacherous for medieval pilgrims, and become renowned for the monks and their Saint Bernard dogs who saved the lives of countless pilgrims.

Day 2 Cross into Italy and walk to Etroubles (4hrs, 13.5km/8.5mi)

The walk today will take you over the Saint Bernard Pass and across the border into Italy. You'll walk through mountain villages and enjoy evocative views en route. Some sections today are a bit steep, but alternative options are available. Overnight in Etroubles, the lovely village which was once home to the winter quarters of the Roman soldiers.

Day 3 Walk along mountain and pinewood trails to Aosta (4-5hrs, 15.5km/9.5mi)

Today's walk promises a deep experience along the mountains, crossing meadows and pinewoods. You'll pass ruins and ancient chapels, used by pilgrims of the past, and journey along the stream "Ru Neuf". It's possible to skip the last descent of the day by taking a bus through the village of Gignod.

Today you will journey through woods, fields of growing crops and charming, small towns. We recommend stopping to visit the Abbey of Saint Albino, which you will find just outside of Mortara. Requirements
MODERATE – GRADE 3 This is a moderate grade walk along paths that are well defined and clearly marked. You should be an experienced walker and be able to walk for up to 11 hours a day (although most days are between 6 to 7 hours) in hot sun on dusty and stony tracks. There are some steep hills, and the terrain is mountainous in some parts. The whole route is well-marked by the official signs of the Via Francigena. A good level of fitness is required. As with all of our trips it is important that you are well prepared. We suggest that you undertake regular exercise – swimming, cycling, and jogging, three to four times a week for three months prior to your departure. The walking times e are calculated from town centre to town centre and may vary depending on the accommodations booked. Wet weather gear, sunscreen, good walking boots / shoes and sun hat - walking poles optional but recommended. (A comprehensive gear list is provided in the pre-departure information provided on booking).,

We require that you take out a personal travel insurance policy to cover against sickness, accident, loss of baggage, unexpected alterations to travel arrangements and travel disruption, emergency evacuation, cancellations, etc. A suggested policy is enclosed with these notes. If you take out an alternative policy, we need to be advised of the details. Please note: if you choose credit card cover, in our experience, this may not insure against high cost needs. For example; helicopter emergency evacuation. If you do decide to choose credit card coverage, please check all policy details thoroughly.
