What to Look for in Machu Picchu Travel Reviews

Most trip reviews tend to focus on some or all of these 5 key areas, not all of which may be relevant to you: the tour guide, travel company, service level, country or countries traveled in, and the trip itinerary.

Remember, just because you see a 1 star review doesn’t necessarily mean that person disliked the country.

Reviews for tours of Machu Picchu are mostly 5 star. It is important to remember that Machu Picchu is often included on larger Peru or South America tours, typically taking 2-4 days of the itinerary depending on whether or not you are hiking in on the Inca Trail.

So, bear in mind that many of the ratings and reviews for Machu Picchu travel are also addressing many other Peru sights and activities.

When it comes to hiking the Inca Trail, most reviews are again positive and cite their guide and tour group as having a very positive effect on their well-being while on the trail. They also comment on how special the trek was as a bonding experience with their fellow tour attendees.

Trekking to Machu Picchu along any one of the three major trails is not easy by any means, but it is manageable for a wide range of travelers. That said, never book an experience like this unless you’re ready for some early mornings, high altitude, and long physically challenging days.

Unfortunately it can be difficult to gauge just how you’ll feel on the tour, especially when “moderately physical challenging” covers a very wide spectrum - and every traveler will interpret this differently. If you’re still worried after reading the itinerary, be sure to ask a tour company representative very clear questions about the elevation and terrain. This should help you determine if you can manage.

Accommodations around Machu Picchu are mostly limited to Aguas Calientes. Typically you won’t spend more than a night in the town, and you should expect hostel like conditions - comfortable but very basic.
