Loved the daily excursions and the experience of seeing the wildlife in their natural habitat was really wonderful! VAYA’s Gabrielle was delightful and extremely helpful. "We did a seven day Kilimanjaro climb on Machame Route and a four day safari to Serengeti, Ngorogoro Crater and Tarangire. Eco-Africa took care of all the details. The climbing guides and Kili fighters (porters) were so kind, helpful and motivating. We are vegan and the food they provided was incredible. I didn’t need any of the “just in case” food I packed for myself. The safari guides were also kind, funny, engaging and very knowledgeable. We saw so many animals and birds. We will be reliving and sharing this experience with friends and family for years to come. Thank you to everyone at Eco-Africa for making us feel like part of the family. We would recommend this company to anyone considering a climb or safari!"

"This company is unbelievable. Firstly I get a cancellation of the Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica trip. The compensation in comparison to a like for like trip was peanuts and the increase was 1000s more! Then I read numerous customers are getting switched onto trips without paying the difference. I ring them again and they promise to swop me for no extra charge. This was agreed with their team leader. I waited until getting a cabin on Fram without getting too excited but sure enough we were swopped and I was so excited and looking forward to the trip of a lifetime. Yesterday I got a devastating email saying ‘i am reaching out to you since regardless of his statement that we will be able to price match you, this request was denied by our Revenue department and we are not able to honour the price match.’ After speaking to this new team leader she had very little to say, no excuse or justification just she was sorry. There is no way we can afford the 1000s extra they are asking for the same trip. We are now left heartbroken for a second time. This company has no care or consideration for its customers and I for one will not use them again and I will tell anyone who will listen how shocking they are!"

Eco, Sustainable & Green Travel Tour Selection Trips

Destinations like Costa Rica, the Galapagos, and some of the Balkan countries in Eastern Europe make eco and sustainable tourism a priority - these can be some great places to start looking for inspiration!
  • When it comes to Eco tours, low impact is the goal. For accommodation, think tents or lodges built with sustainable materials vs large hotels and resorts. For transport, taking local transport as much as possible is best - taking trains and buses over private cars or short-haul/domestic flights. Check what type of accommodation and transport is included in your trip.
  • Read the sustainable or responsible travel commitment of your tour operator before booking. Many, like G Adventures or Intrepid Travel, have foundations that they have set up to support sustainable tourism and setup projects to support local communities in developing countries where they operate trips to, or to support endangered wildlife. 
  • Pick a tour that uses local country guides, who can show you the best of Eco or Sustainable Tourism in their destination(s). 
  • Eco friendly activities look to protect nature, wildlife, and the environment, so make sure any trips you pick do not include riding of wild animals (such as elephants) or (directly or indirectly) encourage the keeping of animals in captivity for tourism purposes.  
  • When going on safari, look for operators that prioritize the protection of animals and respect them in their natural habitats. 
  • While we often can’t avoid talking flights to reach our travel destination, there are carbon offset programs available which you can choose to contribute to - your tour operator may be able to advise further on the options available.
