Russian Cruise Rivers Tour Selection Trips

  • Make sure your cruise comes complete with English-speaking crew and guides.
  • The Russian river cruising season lasts from May to early October, though not all ships run that long.
  • Consider carefully if you want to use a Russian company or a Western-run cruise line; many of the Russian operators are not yet fully experienced in catering to North American and Western European tastes.
  • The weather in northern Russia can get cold in May and September, so before booking an expensive balcony cabinconsider carefully just how much time you’ll actually spend on your balcony.
  • A number of river cruise lines operate on the Moscow-St. Petersburg route, so you’ll have a choice of budgets and levels of luxury.
  • While itineraries are similar among the various cruise lines, some may spend more (or less) time in port or offer a few different ports or side trips than their competitors.
  • Get your Russian visa well in advance, since the process can be time-consuming and at times frustrating; some river cruise lines will help you expedite this.
  • Book your cruise as early as possible, both because your desired cabin type may sell out quickly and because early bookings often net discounts and other perks.
  • If finishing your voyage in St. Petersburg, some cruise lines offer optional extensions to Helsinki, Finland, and other Baltic destinations -- great cruise experiences in their own right.
  • Other Russian river cruises -- on Russian-run ships -- operate on separate sections of the Volga as well as the Don River. Some Dnieper River cruises are still operating in Ukraine, but have at least temporarily altered their itineraries to avoid Russian-claimed Crimea.
