What's this trip about?

Even with its vigorous economic growth, Vietnam is as charming, picturesque and wondrous as the first time we cycled here more than a decade ago. Certainly, the country is thriving, but that just means the roads are a bit better (making our bikes a little happier), and even more luxurious hotels pepper the coast. But the people remain the same: gracious, warm, and infinitely inviting—and we certainly meet a lot of them on this epic journey from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. In between, we take in all the highlights, from China Beach to the Imperial tombs to endless miles of scenic, colourful country and coastal roads.

Travel Map

Day 1

Discover the historic architecture, tree-lined boulevards and delightfully chaotic street-life of Vietnam’s capital city in a traditionally Vietnamese way: on cyclo (bike-propelled cart). Enjoy a guided visit, covering everything from the city’s French colonial architecture to winding streets around the cities famed lake.

Day 2

Today we fly to Hue: the Imperial capital of Vietnam. Here, take a picture-perfect introduction ride and walk viewing some of the most beautiful scenery central Vietnam has to offer. Enjoy cocktails and a dinner of local specialties tonight at the hotel.

Day 3

Ride through quiet rice fields and over small riverside paths before ending at the Thien Mu Pagoda. From here, we will head to a private home for a magical lunch. Dinner is back in town at a charming restaurant with a French twist,.

Day 4

Drive along the coast to Da Nang, stopping for a riverside lunch in the city’s hippest restaurant before heading to Hoi An to explore this amazing town. This afternoon is yours to wander through town, follows by dinner on your own in one of the many wonderful small restaurants in Hoi An.

Day 5

Head into the market to watch the women haggle over the day’s fresh fish catch. Ride around Hoi An, passing through traditional rice paddies interspersed with ancestral tombs, water buffalo and hundreds of smiling children. Finish at our favourite cooking school in a beautiful river setting.

Day 6

Take a short flight to Dalat, the City of Eternal Spring, and one of the most enduring and romantic legacies of French colonialism. Dine in the hotel’s Le Rabelais restaurant tonight, indulging in dishes so authentically French, you could be forgiven for momentarily forgetting you are in Vietnam.

Day 7

Bike out of town passing rose greenhouses, through villages and countryside, to the house of one of our greatest friends, Mr. Quy, who prepares a perfect lunch entirely from local fresh produce. In the afternoon, choose to do more walking, explore a flower market, golf at the old imperial course, or visit the last Emperor’s palace.

Day 8

Take an early drive downhill to Nha Trang and ride alongside a mellow fishing village towards our hotel. In the afternoon, enjoy the resort—sipping Champagne while watching the sunset from the privacy of your room.

Day 9

Enjoy a relaxing day exploring the resort and visiting the spa. For those who want to hit the trail again, we'll head out for a bike ride or hike.

Day 10

Fly to Ho Chi Minh City this morning, walk around the local markets and explore the city. Bike to the Cu Chi Tunnels, a visible reminder of the war and how close it got to Saigon. Check out the galleries of the contemporary Vietnamese art scene. Our final night culminates in an unforgettable dinner at our favourite market-style restaurant.

Day 11

On our last day in Vietnam we will arrange to take you to the airport for your flight home.

It's been almost 50 years since we made a conscious decision, on the back of a cocktail napkin, to encourage people to "slow down to see the world." Ever since, Butterfield & Robinson has been leading trips that amble where others stride, linger where others inhale, bike where others motor and sip where others quaff. In the words of Gypsy Rose Lee, a woman who, if nothing else, knew the value of doing things very, very slowly: "Anything worth doing well is worth doing slowly."

There’s so much more to B&R than the high thread count of your sheets. Our kind of luxury takes you to a place you never knew existed. It’s a feeling of freedom. A feeling of exuberance. A feeling like you don’t need a watch or a wallet and you haven’t a care in the world. Wherever we travel, we delve deep into the heart of the local culture, your meals are some of the best in your life, and your sleeps every bit as delicious. But this merely sets the stage for the magical, ineffable part of B&R—the moments of discovery—and self-discovery—that you’ll never, ever forget.

The B&R difference is the best biking and walking routes in the world’s most incredible places. It’s the most capable and genuinely friendly guides you’ll find anywhere. It’s the most interesting hotels the region has to offer. It’s amazing culinary experiences. It’s state-of-the-art equipment, great wines at dinner, a water bottle that’s always filled, route suggestions you won’t find in any guidebook, et cetera! Are you starting to get the picture?

Our Expertise

Incomparable Service

From the first phone call to the final nostalgic photo swap, we pride ourselves on anticipating and answering each and every question you might have before, during and after your trip – plus a hundred more we thought you might like to know. That way, the only surprises on your trip are good ones.

50 Years of Experience

BB&R’s been slowing down to see the world since 1966, and while a steady diet of good food, great wine and miles of biking and walking has kept us feeling sprightly, we can’t deny the truth: we’re about to turn 50. Fortunately, “mid-life crisis” isn’t in our vocabulary—in fact, we’re actually pretty excited about it.

Amazing Routes

We meticulously map out easy-to-follow route notes for our trips. By no means do you have to follow them, but if you do, we promise nothing short of spectacular (think quiet country lanes, glorious vistas and, often, being the only ones in sight). Our guides always have additional scenic routes up their sleeves, too. Up for more of a challenge? Ask and you shall receive.

Impeccable Guides

B&R guides are an exceptional group: consummate hosts, mind readers and raconteurs, among many other things. Think teachers, painters, travel writers, architects, botanists and biologists. The only documents thicker than their CVs are their passports. They’ve lived all over the world. They speak a gazillion languages. And they’re ridiculously fun.

Expert Trip Designers

Our talented team of Trip Designers are the best in the world at what they do—and what they do is turn fantasies into reality. (We thought about changing their title to “Dream Weavers,” but we didn’t want to re-print all those business cards.)

Exceptional Hotels

Winning hotels are a hallmark of B&R; we go to great lengths to find properties that are unique expressions of the region. Often that means they’ve had a previous life as a monastery or a castle. Think of them as the charming and intimate garnish atop your trip. Best of all? We’re friends with our hoteliers, which means preferential treatment for you.
