What's this trip about?

Though Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam are close in proximity, they couldn’t be more different. However, with B&R’s Indochina Biking trip, the three come together beautifully in one unique journey. Cambodia is our jumping-off point, where we’ll explore the ancient Khmer temples of Angkor. Laos, one of the world’s emerging cities, offers a Buddhist legacy and miles of Mekong-side riding. In the charming Luang Prabang, a UNESCO-protected city, you’ll experience the country’s French history as you ride past faded buildings from the French colonial period. Even with Vietnam’s vibrant economic growth, this country is as charming, picturesque and wondrous as the first time we cycled here more than a decade ago.

Itinerary

Travel Map

Day 1

We will pick you up at the airport today in a private car and take you to your first hotel. You can spend the rest of the day relaxing in the pool before meeting your local Khmer guide in the early evening for cocktails.

Day 2

Bike or walk into the heart of the Cambodia countryside to explore the local Khmer temples. Later, head into the magnificent temple of Angkor Wat where our local guide describes this awe-inspiring temple that has defied time and nature for more than 700 years. At nightfall, enjoy dinner at our favourite local restaurant.

Day 3

Today explore the temples of Bayon. Traverse the trails of the park lined by a jungle of silk, cotton and strangler fig trees. Spend the afternoon biking, hiking, or visiting the lady temple of Bantei Srei.

Day 4

Explore the wild jungle temple of Ta Prohm and bike or walk through the park, passing the temples of Angkor Wat, the Elephant Terrace and the gates of Angkor Thom one last time. Take a short flight to Luang Prabang and enjoy a special Lao welcome with a traditional Lao Baci well-wishing ceremony.

Day 5

Cycle north out of town along side the Mekong. Enjoy a boat ride bound for the nearby Pak Ou cave and cruise down the Mekong. Walk to Vat Xieng Thong, a beautiful temple dating from the 16thC and end at the National Museum in the former Royal Palace, open exclusively for us.

Day 6

Rise early today to witness 600 saffron-clad monks emerging from morning prayers and silently proceeding through town to collect alms. Head to the multi-tiered cascades of the Tad Kouang Si waterfalls for breakfast and spend the day exploring, shopping, or biking.

Day 7

This morning head to the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi for a Cyclo ride along tree-lined boulevards, experiencing the city’s historic architecture and the capital’s delightfully chaotic street life. Take a city tour by our favourite local guide.

Day 8

After breakfast fly to Hue, the imperial capital of Vietnam. Once in Hue we have chosen the most picture-perfect area for our ride where we will introduce you to some of the most beautiful scenery central Vietnam has to offer.

Day 9

Today’s ride loops through the quiet rice field and over small riverside paths before ending at the Thien Mu, where we’ll head to a private home for a magical lunch by our charming hosts who are fascinated with the imperial history of Hue.

Day 10

Travel under the famous "pass of the clouds" to Da Nang where we'll have a riverside lunch before riding out into the countryside. Tonight meet for cocktails at our friend Duc’s restaurant where you’ll taste this culinary wizard’s signature mango margarita and sit down for a tasting of Vietnam’s best fusion cuisine.

Day 11

Head into the market early to watch women haggle over the day's fresh fish. Then you’ll head out for a great ride that loops around Hoi An, passing through traditional rice paddies and fish farms interspersed with ancestral tombs and water buffalo, finishing at our favourite cooking school in a beautiful river setting.

Day 12

Bike inland to the marvelous Cham Temple of My Son, or, for a relaxing ride, pedal to the local ferry crossing to ride through some fantastic rice fields and local villages. You might even choose to cast some fishing nets on your return trip!

Day 13

Take a morning flight to Ho Chi Minh City. Upon arrival you’ll head directly to the rubber plantations north of the city where you’ll bike to the Cu Chi Tunnels, which are a visible reminder of the war and how close it got to Saigon. Our final night culminates in an unforgettable dinner at our favourite market-style restaurant.

Day 14

On your last day in Vietnam we’ve arranged for a private car to take you to the airport. If there is time before your flight, we will make a little game of it if you’re up for a scavenger hunt on motorbikes!

It's been almost 50 years since we made a conscious decision, on the back of a cocktail napkin, to encourage people to "slow down to see the world." Ever since, Butterfield & Robinson has been leading trips that amble where others stride, linger where others inhale, bike where others motor and sip where others quaff. In the words of Gypsy Rose Lee, a woman who, if nothing else, knew the value of doing things very, very slowly: "Anything worth doing well is worth doing slowly."

There’s so much more to B&R than the high thread count of your sheets. Our kind of luxury takes you to a place you never knew existed. It’s a feeling of freedom. A feeling of exuberance. A feeling like you don’t need a watch or a wallet and you haven’t a care in the world. Wherever we travel, we delve deep into the heart of the local culture, your meals are some of the best in your life, and your sleeps every bit as delicious. But this merely sets the stage for the magical, ineffable part of B&R—the moments of discovery—and self-discovery—that you’ll never, ever forget.

The B&R difference is the best biking and walking routes in the world’s most incredible places. It’s the most capable and genuinely friendly guides you’ll find anywhere. It’s the most interesting hotels the region has to offer. It’s amazing culinary experiences. It’s state-of-the-art equipment, great wines at dinner, a water bottle that’s always filled, route suggestions you won’t find in any guidebook, et cetera! Are you starting to get the picture?

Our Expertise

Incomparable Service

From the first phone call to the final nostalgic photo swap, we pride ourselves on anticipating and answering each and every question you might have before, during and after your trip – plus a hundred more we thought you might like to know. That way, the only surprises on your trip are good ones.

50 Years of Experience

BB&R’s been slowing down to see the world since 1966, and while a steady diet of good food, great wine and miles of biking and walking has kept us feeling sprightly, we can’t deny the truth: we’re about to turn 50. Fortunately, “mid-life crisis” isn’t in our vocabulary—in fact, we’re actually pretty excited about it.

Amazing Routes

We meticulously map out easy-to-follow route notes for our trips. By no means do you have to follow them, but if you do, we promise nothing short of spectacular (think quiet country lanes, glorious vistas and, often, being the only ones in sight). Our guides always have additional scenic routes up their sleeves, too. Up for more of a challenge? Ask and you shall receive.

Impeccable Guides

B&R guides are an exceptional group: consummate hosts, mind readers and raconteurs, among many other things. Think teachers, painters, travel writers, architects, botanists and biologists. The only documents thicker than their CVs are their passports. They’ve lived all over the world. They speak a gazillion languages. And they’re ridiculously fun.

Expert Trip Designers

Our talented team of Trip Designers are the best in the world at what they do—and what they do is turn fantasies into reality. (We thought about changing their title to “Dream Weavers,” but we didn’t want to re-print all those business cards.)

Exceptional Hotels

Winning hotels are a hallmark of B&R; we go to great lengths to find properties that are unique expressions of the region. Often that means they’ve had a previous life as a monastery or a castle. Think of them as the charming and intimate garnish atop your trip. Best of all? We’re friends with our hoteliers, which means preferential treatment for you.
