Itinerary
Welcome to Darwin, the Northern Territory’s balmy, laidback, slightly kooky capital city. Trade the urban heat for the cool swimming holes of Litchfield National Park. Get a special welcome to the Wulna Country from the Limilngan-Wulna people, and gain an insight into...
Put the 4x4 through its paces on the way to Jim Jim Falls. Often raging; sometimes a mere trickle, the falls are an epic feature of the landscape. Hike to the base before continuing to Twin Falls, where the Kakadu National Park operates a boat and boardwalk adventure...
Hike through Ubirr and see ancient indigenous rock art that dates back almost 1,500 years. Clamber up a rocky escarpment for astonishing views across the Nardab Floodplain and East Alligator River, then cool off with a splash in the plunge pools of Maguk (Barramundi Gorge) before returning to Darwin.
Enjoy a free day becoming familiarised with Darwin's endearingly eccentric city scene.
Drive into Nitmiluk National Park. Enjoy a quick dip in Edith Falls before arriving in Katherine Gorge. Hear about the region's cultural significance to the local Jawoyn Aboriginal people, then tuck into classic outback pub fare in Daly Waters.
Explore the sacred site of Karlu Karlu (Devil's Marbles), then head across the Tropic of Capricorn and arrive in Alice Springs.
Flanked by rugged hills and spindly ridges, Alice Springs is the archetypal gateway to Central Australia’s vast Outback. Hike past the Valley of the Winds’ gargantuan rock formations, then be treated to a mesmerising Uluru sunset.
Admire the morning colours that break over the world’s biggest rock face, then venture in for a closer look. Join a local Aboriginal guide on a cultural walk to learn more about the sacred importance of this hallowed site.
Although the hike may be a little challenging at times, the sights to be savoured at Kings Canyon are magnificent. Admire the Garden of Eden oasis before returning for another relaxing evening gathered around a campfire.
Visit the opal-mining town of Coober Pedy, descend into one of its mine and see how the locals have accommodated to a life lived underground.
Take in the vast expanses of the Central Australian wilderness on the drive to Quorn, travelling the Stuart Highway and stopping at expansive salt lakes along the way.
Lace up the hiking boots for a short trek up to the summit of Dutchman's Stern. With 360-degree panoramic views, you'll be looking out over Quorn, Spencer Gulf and the Flinders Ranges. Wind through the gorgeous Clare Valley – famous for its rieslings – on the final leg to Adelaide.

The Intrepid Travel Experience
If you’re looking for adventure, you’ve come to the right place. For the past 25 years, we’ve been taking small groups of travelers on unforgettable trips around the world. What makes them unforgettable? Take a look for yourself and discover the Intrepid experience.
Our travelers have three styles of tour to choose from: Basix, Original and Comfort. Each has a different level of inclusions and accommodation, but all have unforgettable real life experiences as part of the package. Travellers can also choose themed trips, such as Family, Sailing or Food, to suit their interests.
Our group size has an average of just ten travellers, which allows us to get off the beaten track, use local accommodation and transport, and really get to know the culture. It also ensures we are contributing to the local economy; by choosing local suppliers we were able to keep AUD 60 million in local economies in 2012. We’re also working hard to reduce our carbon footprint and were the first in our sector to introduce carbon offset trips. This, along with our many corporate sustainability activities, has meant we’re one of the travel industry’s leaders in responsible travel.
Why Intrepid?
- Small groups - average of 10 people per trip
- Sustainability - pioneers for the industry
- Local leaders - authentic perspectives
- Local transport - get close and personal
- Local accommodation - experience real living
- Intrepid travelers - like-minded companions
History
Intrepid Travel has come a long way since its beginnings in 1989. From two university friends, a typewriter and a kitchen desk, it is now a proud member of The Intrepid Group, taking over 100,000 travelers every year.
Intrepid Travel is part of The Intrepid Group of companies, alongside leading small group adventure companies Peregrine, Urban Adventures and PEAK DMC.
Despite growing into a global business with over 1,000 staff based all over the world and over 800 different trips across every continent, we’ve remained devoted to the same grassroots values and responsible travel philosophies that we had at the very beginning.
Values
On every trip we operate and in every interaction we have with a client, supplier or local, we live our core values everyday:
- Integrity – Doing the right thing
- Responsible – Think global, act local
- Growth – Stakeholders in our own success
- Innovation – Thriving on new ideas and embracing change
- Fun – It’s engrained into who we are and what we do
- Passion – We are inspired by the work we do and the trips we offer

Style descriptions
Our Original style trips have a great balance of included activities with your group and free time to explore independently. Where we stay ensures we keep our travellers firmly entrenched in a region’s people and culture, and provides them with unique local experiences that benefits the community too. In most locations we stay in simple tourist-class hotels (i.e. 2-3 stars), plus on many trips you'll also get to experience a night with a local family on a homestay or something a little different like a Bedouin camp in the Sahara. Original style trips come with all manner of transport modes and use a mixture of local and private transport. You might find yourself sailing in a dhow in Zanzibar, jumping on a rickshaw in Sri Lanka or sailing on a yacht through the Galapagos. No matter the mode, it's all about minimising our environmental impact and making getting around part of the adventure.
