WHAT TO EXPECT
A new and unique 3-centre tour to Iceland in autumn, featuring first-time visits to the Westman Islands and the spectacularly scenic Vatnajökull National Park, in southeast Iceland, with the focus on bird migration.
Two nights on the island of Heimaey, searching for migrants, with (optional) boat trip around the island watching for seabirds and cetaceans - and sea views out to Surtsey. We’ll check the beautiful autumn landscapes of the Reykjanes Peninsula and magnificent Vatnajökull - Iceland’s largest icecap - for Gyr Falcon, Harlequin Duck and Barrow’s Goldeneye, and watch for waders, geese and Whooper Swans gathering to migrate.
Iceland’s weather is even more changeable than the UK’s! Autumn weather is typically cool and windy, with alternating periods of bright sunny spells and showers. The latter may occur as rain, sleet and occasionally even snow. In September, average temperatures at Reykavik range from 2-10°C. Lightweight layers of warm and weatherproof clothing essential.
BIRDS
65-75 species
WALKING
Walks are no more than 3 miles in total on any one day and never more than 2 miles at one time. The terrain is mostly level but often rough underfoot with sharp lava. Stout walking boots with strong corrugated soles for grip recommended. Some participants may find a walking pole useful.
TRAVEL
Scheduled flights from London to Keflavik with Icelandair.
Ground Transport by minibus driven by our experienced local wildlife guide.
BOAT TRIPS
The crossing by car ferry from Landeyjahöfn to Heimaey, largest of the Westman Islands, is relatively short and takes only 35 minutes or so.
