Company owners Gene and Jo Ann Taylor have a genuine passion for active living. By that, we mean not living life sitting on a couch and watching it go by on a television screen, or staying so close to home that we could only dream about what the rest of the world was like. Always adventuresome and active, we decided to make it our life’s work. So in 1989 Jo Ann quit Nike and Gene left a national marketing and management company and together we founded The Walking Connection. From the beginning our concept was to create a community of like-minded people who enjoy walking, hiking, being outside, and for many, traveling and exploring some of the world’s greatest destinations by foot, kayak, hot air balloon or occasional zip line.

Being active and enjoying life is at the very core of who we are and what we do. Our company is not simply about fitness, exercise and being healthy. Though those are a big part, we are also about enjoying the great wines of the world, the unique flavors of local cuisine, meeting people of different cultures and taking long walks, just to see what’s around the next corner.

We are also rooted in adventure travel. We lead exciting journeys that balance active exploration with exceptional comfort. We criss-cross the globe searching for just the right places to visit and then create amazing itineraries that provide our traveling guests with authentic experiences. Whether walking through a bustling city market, the narrow passages of a rural village or hiking to a distant mountain top, we connect our guests to each other as well as to the local flavor, culture, cuisine and of course, great walks that are in nearly every corner of the world.

Walking is the connection…

…to an enriched lifestyle.

Walking is the connection…

…to the greatest destinations in the world!

As established leaders in the providing healthy living information, especially geared toward fitness walking, training and hiking, in 1992 we added a new component to our list services, which at the time was just beginning to gain popularity in the fitness, lifestyle and travel industries – active adventure travel. Our recipe for success is pretty simple. We take the existing active lifestyles of our clients, learn about their personal preferences and combined them with our professional planning skills to to create and personally lead remarkable travel adventures. Our goal is to treat every guest as special. And we do our best to make you a lifelong customer and guest by working tirelessly to earn your trust, over and over again, year after year.

Accommodation

,Genoa Located in Genoa’s historical center, this location is a 16th-century noble palace that has been meticulously renovated into a charming and intimate hotel. Architectural details have been beautifully preserved and paired with contemporary design and minimalist furnishings to create dramatic and comfortable guest rooms and elegant public spaces and halls overlooking the quiet square. Just steps from the Duomo, the San Lorenzo cathedral, you can also easily walk to the city’s museums, restaurants, and cafés, and the Old Port area with its aquarium, Renzo Pianodesigned Bigo elevator, and pirate ship. Sestri Levante In a privileged location on the Peninsula of Sestri Levante above the ancient town walls, this four-star castle hotel with extensive grounds and manicured gardens overlooks the entire coast. Light-filled and spacious, guestrooms have classic furnishings and polished wood floors. A grand entry, public lounges, and solarium terrace evoke 1920s glamor and style, while a private elevator descends to the town center, promenade, and marina. A private swimming area includes a seawater enclosure with beach lounges and bar, with an outlet onto the natural rocky shore. Among many dining options, the hotel’s fine-dining restaurant offers indoor and alfresco seating with such regional specialties as pink gnocchi with seafood and pine nuts or catch of the day with Mediterranean flavors. Sestri Levante Overnight: Manarola In the heart of Manarola—the second-smallest of the five Cinque Terre towns, and probably the oldest—this family-run bed and breakfast consists of a main building with a garden and stunning terrace overlooking the vineyards and sea. Nestled amongst the pastel-colored buildings and medieval church, accommodations are either spacious guestrooms or studio-style apartments with white tile floors and comfortable simple furnishings. You are welcomed like family in this exceptional setting; breakfast on the private terrace always includes homemade baked goods, and later you are invited into the kitchen for a cooking lesson on authentic Ligurian basil pesto.

Additional Information

Activity Level:

This tour is one of our Self-Guided Walking Adventures, rated moderate with challenging sections. This tour is more of a hiking than a walking experience. You should be in excellent physical condition with good balance and no orthopedic or cardiovascular conditions. While hikes only average 2 to 4 miles per day, there are significant daily ascents and descents up to 1,300 feet on steep paths and steps. The Cinque Terre region is characterized by extremely hilly and rocky terrain and very few stretches of flat walking. Ascents range from 30 to 45 minutes, beginning with 10 to 20 minutes of steep stair climbing on high stone steps. The hiking trails level out for periods of time and then descend steeply, also over stone steps. The terrain is mainly single-track trails, rocky with loose gravel. Paths are sometimes cobbled, hard-packed dirt, uneven stone steps, and pine needle-covered dirt through wooded areas, and occasionally paved. The itinerary includes three different Natural Protected Areas: Portofino, Punta Manara, and Cinque Terre. Most of the hikes are in oak and pine forests, through rugged hills dotted with Mediterranean herbs and shrubs, terraced farmland, and hillside vineyards. Some of the hikes have little coverage from the sun, which, depending upon the temperature, can increase the challenge of this tour. Despite the paths being along the coast, they are well protected by vegetation and vertigo is not an issue, except in the Cinque Terre National Park, where a second option is available. A walking stick is highly recommended, even if you do not usually use one. There are no easier walking options available except for very short strolls in towns or on flat promenades by the sea. However, the availability of local trains and boats provides plenty of flexibility and opportunities to skip the walks and explore the authentic fishing villages or bustling towns of the Italian Riviera, visit historical sites, or, depending on the time of year, to swim in the Ligurian Sea.
