Day 2 Commence climb to "Shira One" (3550m)

After completing the necessary registration formalities at Londorossi National Park gate, we drive a short distance on a steep track through farmland and plantations (2800m), and continue climbing steadily on foot through shrub forest and giant heather to reach the ri...

Day 3 To Shira Two camp (3840m)

We have an easy day to help acclimatisation and to explore the grassy moorland and the volcanic rock formations of the plateau. We walk to the summit of Shira Cathedral (3750m), a huge buttress of rock surrounded by steep spires and pinnacles. There is a tangible sens...

Day 4 Trek to camp near Moir Hut (4200m)

We explore beneath the Northern Ice fields, an area almost totally unvisited by tourists and with unusual views of Kibo. The morning walk is a steady climb away from the moorland of Shira Plateau to reach the broad upland desert beneath the Lent Hills. After lunch in ...

Day 7 To Barafu (4600m)

A short but steep climb out of Karanga valley, following an easy path on compacted scree that gains altitude unrelentingly to reach the Barafu campsite (4600m) for lunch. During the afternoon, other walkers will begin to fill the campsite for the first time in our tri...

Day 8 Ascend to summit, return to Millenium Camp (3800m)

We will start our ascent by torchlight at midnight so that we can be up on the Crater rim for sunrise. The steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig-zags and a slow but steady pace will take us to Stella Point (5,735 m), in about five or six hours...

Day 9 Descend to Mweka gate and on to Arusha

We have a sustained descent on a well constructed path through lovely tropical forests alive with birdsong and boasting lush undergrowth with considerable botanical interest. Our route winds down to the National Park gate at Mweka (1650m) and on through coffee and ban...

Requirements
As with all our Moderate to Challenging programs, we expect clients to be regular outdoors people, enjoying aerobic sport around three to four times a week over some period of time. Preferably this has been a long term interest but if not, you have set a program of fitness preparation with at least three months lead in time to your trip. The fitter you are for your trip, the more of a holiday it will be. Activities as close to the actual activity on your trip are the best training; in this instance hill walking, with and without a daypack. This builds leg strength, aerobic capacity and confidence in your ability to travel comfortably with a pack for extended periods. At the same time, you are also comfortable with the layers you like to wear and footwear. Whilst this ascent of Kilimanjaro is not a technical climb, it is nevertheless a short and steep trek at altitude, and for many people it will be the hardest physical walk of their life. In order to get the most out of the trip, people should join in Arusha with a maximum state of fitness. There is not time to ‘get fit on the trek’ as with some of our other longer trekker programs elsewhere. Come and talk to us if you are unsure about your suitability for the Shira route; we would be happy to discuss your level of experience and fitness with you and put you in touch with one of our guides to help you make your decision. Specialist gear required include walking boots and day pack (a comprehensive gear list is provided in the pre-departure information provided on booking).,
Travel Insurance
We require that you take out a personal travel insurance policy to cover against sickness, accident, loss of baggage, unexpected alterations to travel arrangements and travel disruption, emergency evacuation, cancellations, etc. A suggested policy is enclosed with these notes. If you take out an alternative policy, we need to be advised of the details. It is your responsibility to ensure any and all pre-existing medical conditions are adequately covered by your insurer. Please note: if you choose credit card cover, in our experience, this may not insure against high cost needs. For example; helicopter emergency evacuation. If you do decide to choose credit card coverage, please check all policy details thoroughly. You should always carry your travel insurance policy, emergency card and photocopies of your passport and cash cards with you during your trip.

NON EXCLUSIVE trip ; check availability with AWC before confirming to client ; operator min = 2 pax Runs Every Friday fortnightly from June to October and December to February WE invest in training/first aid/equipment for guides who are disciplined and experienced. WE have a commitment to porter protection and safety WE operate an industry leading responsible travel policy Good quality food, equipment and accom contribute to summit success WE have 25+ years experience on Kili Emergency oxygen is included on the Shira fixed departures. WE are licensed Travel Agent, covered by Australian Consumer & Travel Law > MORE BELOW Comments from past clients "The best experience of my life", "Without the support of the crew i would not have made it to summit", "THE FOOD ON THE MOUNTAIN WAS BETTER THAN THE HOTEL!!" SUCCESS RATE TO CRATER RIM - 93% SUCCESS RATE TO UHURU PEAK - 88% WE abide by KPAP (Kili Porter Assistance Program) - Do not overload porters, pay proper wages Our operator has TALA (Climbing) license, and have TATO (Tanzanian Tour Operators License) Other info: - These Shira routes start on west Kili and there are many variations, some of them with bad publicity. - Our Shira 8 route was designed by us to offer good acclimatization and avoid the crowds. It does this by having short, unstressful walks with the group often arriving in camp at lunchtime and then in the afternoon having an acclimatization walk above camp before returning lower to camp to sleep. This is the best way to acclimatize - on days 3 & 4 are excellent afternoon acclimatization walks. - The order of campsites is chosen to avoid the crowds as Kilimanjaro is a popular mountain and the routes of Lemosho and Shira join up with Machame before Barranco any day can have 300 plus climbers plus their Tanzanian mountain guides and porters. We avoid the busy areas by camping at Moir Camp on west Kili where few groups go, and the next night sleeping at Lava Tower another quiet campsite. From Lava we walk through the Barranco Valley at around 1030/1100 hrs so all the many many campers from t he previous night have left and we have the single file route up the Barranco Wall to ourselves which makes it much more pleasant. - Visit quieter areas of Kili (particularly day 3) and avoids camping at busiest camps and the crowds on the trails - Most days are not too long: arrive in camp for lunch with time for acclimatization walk, hike high & sleep low, thus suitable for all abilities - Day 5 camp at Karanga, thus shorter hike to the top camp (arrive at Barafu camp for lunch) so there is plenty of time to rest and prepare for the summit - On the way down we camp at Millenium Camp, which makes summit day slightly shorter, also a much less crowded camp Note: fixed departure trips group hotel in Arusha is Ilboru NON EXCLUSIVE trip thus check availability with AWC and if the trip is running
