I had a great time on the trip. I got to see alot of Panama and our guide was fantastic! However, I was one of 4 people not travelling as a couple. I also didn't realise I was joining a tour group that had been together for about 6 weeks already. The mix of people worked on our trip and everyone got on really well but I would caution people if they are joining the shorter tours that they may be coming into an established dynamic and some people may find that hard to break into. Our guide Eddie was absolutely fantastic - always friendly, smiling and full of knowledge about the areas we visited. He gave great (if long!) briefs and orientation walks at each town, which was very helpful. It was clear that he is well liked at the places we were staying. I had an activity guide comment that he is an exception compared to some of the tour leaders he has to deal with! Eddie had to deal with a girl leaving the group (she didn't bother to tell him - another member of our group had to) and I think he handled it very well.

I have travelled using Intrepid for a while now and whilst not every trip is the same they generally do a good job

I very much concur with the comments made by my fellow travellers. It was really many trips rolled into one… plenty of volcanoes, rainforests, beaches, and wildlife combined with Spanish colonial and Mayan architecture with activities to match… boating, swimming, wildlife watching, hiking and city tours. Explore’s longest trip I believe. All the way from the Panama Canal to Guatemala City. Bocas del Toro in Panama reminded me of an Old West Town in the US. Got bitten to buggery by some vicious biting insects at Rincon de la Vieja, so beware. I saw two quetzal quite by chance near one of the zip wiring platforms in Selvatura Park in Monteverde. Unfortunately, the only sloths seen were captive in an enclosure. But there were two coatis by the roadside. Talking of Ometepe, the breakfast bird (urraca) was my favourite bird always waiting for us at breakfast. There was more to Copan than I was expecting… quite impressive, though it cannot rival Tikal, which I saw many years before. Panajachel on Lake Atitlan really stands out. What a colourful vibrant place. And then to have our tour leader Tomas take us to his home in Chichicastenango for a meal, that was a highlight. He was the best tour leader I have ever had with Explore and a great representative for his country. The one downside was the very cramped mini bus, already mentioned by others. Anyway, plenty for me to get into for my next book. A shame however that my original review sent a while ago was lost somehow.

Central American Explorer

I had a wonderful time and loved Central America.

Perhaps the best moment for me was a chance close-up encounter with capuchin monkeys.  I loved the wildlife – so many birds, plus spider and howler monkeys and poison dart frogs. The scenery is varied and breath-taking and I really enjoyed all the walks – I would have liked more. The town visits were interesting and varied, particularly the chance to learn more about the troubled history of this fascinating part of the world, but also just to wander about, have a quiet coffee and absorb the atmosphere.

Highlights were Omotepe Island, Rincon de la Vieja, Sarapiqui and El Salvador

Our guide, Tomas, made the trip.  He is extremely knowledgeable, interesting, organised, patient, funny and generally a lovely man who took great care of us.  He went above and beyond to make our journey fun eg holding an impromptu rum party on Omotepe and inviting us to meet his family and have lunch in his home town of Chichicastenago.

I am already planning my next trip with Explore!

Suggestions for improvements; this is a full on trip with very little free time and a lot of time spent travelling.  I would have welcomed an extra 5 or more days to enjoy the wonderful places we were visiting and would have been happy to pay more for the privilege.  After Costa Rica we travelled in a cramped mini bus, which was incredibly uncomfortable given the long hours we spent in it - Explore please provide a bigger bus!
