What's this trip about?

The wonderful riddle of contemporary Japan is how whole-heartedly it has embraced all things modern—all the while retaining the customs of times past. This is truly a land of contrasts: from the bright lights and chaos of Tokyo to the elegance and history of UNESCO-protected Kyoto. As cyclists, we’ve sought out the most serene and picturesque pockets. On the Noto Peninsula, epic rides feature country roads and fishing villages. Elsewhere, we’ll soak in mountain hot springs, visit centuries-old temples, experience the time-honoured tea ceremony, and marvel at meticulously tended gardens.

Itinerary

Day 1

Start your trip by discovering one of the last traditional regions in Japan. Ride from the middle of the peninsula to the northern coast where the landscape is typically Japanese: rugged coastline and rice paddies, along with towns and farmland occupying most flat stretches.

Day 2

Visit the asaichi, or morning market, to witness the line of fish mongers-usually elderly women-dressed in rubber boots who hawk their catch. Ride along the scenic coast and to Sojiji Temple for an introduction to Zen Buddhism and the animist religion known as Shinto.

Day 3

Begin your day with a ride on the quiet coastal road heading south ending at a delightful inn renowned for its superb Japanese-Italian cuisine. Spend your afternoon overlooking Tsukumo Bay.

Day 4

Embark on a quiet ride weaving through sleepy fishing villages, forests, and pastoral landscapes. Stop for a catered lunch before driving along the coast to the hot spring town of Wakura Onsen. Dinner will be a traditional Kaiseki, the fabulous Japanese multi-course meal.

Day 5

Spend your day looking for dolphins, riding scenic trails and winding down in the hot springs before going out on the town for dinner.

Day 6

Explore Kanazawa, and the sublime Kenrokuen, one of Japan’s three greatest gardens. Afterwards, at a nearby private tea house Mrs. Nishida will share her love of chanoyu, or the tea ceremony. Embark on a fantastic loop ride this afternoon before dining with chef Takahashi-san serving up his regional specialties.

Day 7

Explore the local shops in Yamanaka, walk up the marvelous three-km gorge below the town, relax in the onsen and get a shiatsu massage or simply read a book in the peaceful surroundings of the hotel. Spend the afternoon biking through the mountains to the amazing temple of a sect of esoteric Buddhists.

Day 8

After breakfast we’ll drive to Kyoto and say our goodbyes, arriving around noon. Kyoto easily demands a stay of several nights with its temples, shrines and UNESCO World Heritage sites.

It's been almost 50 years since we made a conscious decision, on the back of a cocktail napkin, to encourage people to "slow down to see the world." Ever since, Butterfield & Robinson has been leading trips that amble where others stride, linger where others inhale, bike where others motor and sip where others quaff. In the words of Gypsy Rose Lee, a woman who, if nothing else, knew the value of doing things very, very slowly: "Anything worth doing well is worth doing slowly."

There’s so much more to B&R than the high thread count of your sheets. Our kind of luxury takes you to a place you never knew existed. It’s a feeling of freedom. A feeling of exuberance. A feeling like you don’t need a watch or a wallet and you haven’t a care in the world. Wherever we travel, we delve deep into the heart of the local culture, your meals are some of the best in your life, and your sleeps every bit as delicious. But this merely sets the stage for the magical, ineffable part of B&R—the moments of discovery—and self-discovery—that you’ll never, ever forget.

The B&R difference is the best biking and walking routes in the world’s most incredible places. It’s the most capable and genuinely friendly guides you’ll find anywhere. It’s the most interesting hotels the region has to offer. It’s amazing culinary experiences. It’s state-of-the-art equipment, great wines at dinner, a water bottle that’s always filled, route suggestions you won’t find in any guidebook, et cetera! Are you starting to get the picture?

Our Expertise

Incomparable Service

From the first phone call to the final nostalgic photo swap, we pride ourselves on anticipating and answering each and every question you might have before, during and after your trip – plus a hundred more we thought you might like to know. That way, the only surprises on your trip are good ones.

50 Years of Experience

BB&R’s been slowing down to see the world since 1966, and while a steady diet of good food, great wine and miles of biking and walking has kept us feeling sprightly, we can’t deny the truth: we’re about to turn 50. Fortunately, “mid-life crisis” isn’t in our vocabulary—in fact, we’re actually pretty excited about it.

Amazing Routes

We meticulously map out easy-to-follow route notes for our trips. By no means do you have to follow them, but if you do, we promise nothing short of spectacular (think quiet country lanes, glorious vistas and, often, being the only ones in sight). Our guides always have additional scenic routes up their sleeves, too. Up for more of a challenge? Ask and you shall receive.

Impeccable Guides

B&R guides are an exceptional group: consummate hosts, mind readers and raconteurs, among many other things. Think teachers, painters, travel writers, architects, botanists and biologists. The only documents thicker than their CVs are their passports. They’ve lived all over the world. They speak a gazillion languages. And they’re ridiculously fun.

Expert Trip Designers

Our talented team of Trip Designers are the best in the world at what they do—and what they do is turn fantasies into reality. (We thought about changing their title to “Dream Weavers,” but we didn’t want to re-print all those business cards.)

Exceptional Hotels

Winning hotels are a hallmark of B&R; we go to great lengths to find properties that are unique expressions of the region. Often that means they’ve had a previous life as a monastery or a castle. Think of them as the charming and intimate garnish atop your trip. Best of all? We’re friends with our hoteliers, which means preferential treatment for you.

Accommodation

,Notonosho Ryokan, Wajima Notonosho, our lodging just outside of town, is a 20-room inn and its atmosphere is a great representation of the Japanese aesthetic. Rooms are spacious and all feature tatami mat floors and futon beds. The inn boasts of having the most alkaline water in Japan, and a long soak in the tub will leave your skin feeling silky-smooth.   Hyakurakuso Ryokan, Noto Overlooking Tsukumo Bay on the Noto Peninsula, this modern ryokan takes full advantage of its location with tranquil and relaxing salt water baths and a stunning restaurant that perfectly complements this tucked away gem.   Tadaya Ryokan, Wakura Onsen Set in the hot spring town of Wakura Onsen, Tadaya perches over the Sea of Japan and attracts Japanese from all over the country to bathe in its famous hot springs. Tadaya's spacious bathhouse features indoor and outdoor hot spring baths, and even individual ceramic bathing pots which overlook the sea! After a soak, enjoy a beautiful sunset from the window of your spacious room.   Kayotei Ryokan, Yamanaka A traditional family-owned inn of 10 rooms, the exquisite Kayotei sets the standard for Japanese Ryokans. The inn is set amidst a natural forest preserved in its original state and the hospitality is warm, charming, and unobtrusive. A study in Japanese minimalism, the elegant hot spring overlooks the forest and provides the perfect place for meditation.

Additional Information

Activity Level: Avid

The daily distances range from 25-50 km (16-31 mi.) with longer options on several days. Most rides have several climbs of 2-4 km, some gradual and some steep, but the B&R van will be there should you need a little boost. The routes have very little traffic as we often travel on roads not frequented by the local population. Road quality is excellent. Of our trips outside Europe, this one offers some of the purest and most beautiful biking. If you are comfortable riding a road bike then we recommend that you do so for this trip.
