What's this trip about?

Bicycle from Vermont to Quebec Québec City, and much of the French-speaking Province of Québec, feels worlds away despite its close proximity to the US. We specifically created this fascinating trip for the State of Vermont’s 400th anniversary celebration commemorating the discovery of Lake Champlain. It was so popular and well-received that participants encouraged us to continue offering it on an annual basis—and it remains a perennial sellout. Routes closely trace rivers sailed by Frenchman Samuel de Champlain as he extended his exploration from Québec City, and the settlement he established there, southwest to Lake Champlain. The ride follows some of the oldest routes in North America, winding through small villages, past tidy farms, and by imposing churches that serve as centerpieces for their towns. Québec is a cycling-friendly province and you will encounter many cyclists along the way. The friendly Québécois speak some English but are always appreciative of even piecemeal attempts to communicate in French so, début practiquer votre Français maintenant! With a bit of luck, the prevailing wind will be at your back throughout the trip, propelling you toward your ultimate destination—the most European of all North American cities!

Travel Map

Day 1:

Arrive at your leisure and make your way to downtown Burlington. Enjoy one of Burlington’s finest small hotels, sister properties nestled side by side between Lake Champlain and the Church Street Marketplace. Burlington has been voted as one of the best places to live...

Day 2:

Meet your leaders and fellow guests following breakfast at the hotel this morning. Ride north out of Burlington on the Island Line. Enjoy a visit to Vermont’s first vineyard and winery for a tour, tasting, and picnic lunch. Follow lightly traveled roads along Lake Champlain to a beautiful lakeside setting where you will spend the evening.

Day 3:

Head north through the patchwork farmland of the Champlain Islands to the Canadian border. The route is gently rolling to the border then flattens out almost immediately after passing through Canadian customs.

Day 4:

Follow the Chambly Canal to Fort Chambly at the foot of the rapids on the Richelieu River. The route parallels the river through small towns clustered around architecturally imposing churches where it meets the mighty St. Lawrence.

Day 5:

Begin your day with a ferry trip across the St. Lawrence. Ride the Chemin du Roy, the original route between Montréal and Québec City, and one of the oldest routes in North America. Spin past colorful barns painted in typical Québecois style.

Day 6:

Ride along the north shore of the St. Lawrence through some of Québec’s most beautiful villages. Visit an organic fromagerie to sample local cheese. Enter Québec City on the stunning Promenade-Samuel-de-Champlain bike path.

Day 7:

Enjoy a walking tour of Old Québec City with a spirited Québecois guide before exploring on your own. Visit the historic Place Royale and the narrow streets of Le Petit Champlain, walk to the Plains of Abraham, or relax in a café.

Day 8:

Spin through the rural oasis of Île d’Orléans, an island in the expansive St. Lawrence River. Rolling farmland covers much of the island and roadside stands feature local wines, hard cider, berries and cheese. The island is also a haven for artists, many of whom welcome visitors to their studios.

Day 9:

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will be transported back to the airport in Burlington, Vermont. Travel time is roughly four hours, however border-crossing times may vary.
